its best known figures.

File Tape Former Winston Cup champion and
television commentator Benny Parsons
died this morning of lung cancer in a
Charlotte hospital.

Many younger fans got to know
Parsons from his folksy, down to earth
work on the race telecasts.

But during his career, Parsons was
known as a top driver.

He was named one of the 50 best
drivers ever in 19- 98.

He received a big honor in 2000,
when he was put on a Wheaties box with
other racing champions.

Parsons was diagnosed with lung
cancer in July.

A one- time smoker, he gave up
cigarettes in 19- 78, and wouldn't
allow anyone to smoke around him.

Benny Parsons was 65 years old.

mourning the loss of veteran actress,
Darlene Conley.

a fashion company.

The role earned her two Daytime Emmy
nominations.

About three months ago, Conley was

the weekend at her home in Los Angeles.

Darlene Conley was 72.

Two Minivans exploded as
students were leaving a university

in eastern Baghdad killing at least 28.

And at least four people were killed
when a roadside bomb hit a police

patrol in a predominantly Shiite area
of Baghdad.

Today�s bloodshed comes just as the
Bush administration and the Iraqi

government are making final
preparations to launch another major

security operation in Baghdad aimed at
stopping the sectarian violence.

The exact tally of victims from the
attacks may never be known, but the

United Nations says nearly 35,000
civilians were killed in Iraq last

year, that�s almost three times the
number released by the Iraqi

government.

"It is evident, however that the
violence has not been contained, but

has continued to claim a high number of
innocent victims."

And while the violence continues..
secretary of State Condoleezza Rice

is in nearby Saudi Arabia promoting

pay 925-thousand dollars to hundreds of
female job

applicants at its Danville plant.

That word comes from the U-S Labor
Department today.

The payment is part of a
consent decree to resolve a lawsuit
filed by the Labor

Department on behalf of some 800 women
who were denied jobs at the Danville
plant in 1998 and 1999.

The Labor Department says Goodyear
will hire 60 of the women -- provided
they satisfy Goodyear's newly designed
requirements for entry-level positions
at the Danville factory.
