beginning, and today it's no different.
We're talking about Roanoke City's
efforts to control the deer population.

deer management program, which to this
date, has cost taxpayers 132- thousand
dollars.
During that time, sharpshooters
killed a total of 436 deer.

Olin Melchionna (Mel-show-na) had a
big deer problem here at his South
Roanoke home.
We saw that firsthand when we shot
this herd in his backyard two years
ago.
Olin says they've been a huge pest.

The solution, the committee found,

latest wildfire in Southern California.

They say the wind- driven blaze

confident in fire crews.

blamed for the brief evacuation of a
Bedford County nursing home over the
weekend.

Woodhaven Nursing Home in Montvale
around 9:30 Saturday night.
Smoke from the furnace room had
prompted staffers to call 9-1-1 ...
authorities then evacuated most of the
home's 35 residents for about ten
minutes while they checked the furnace
and cleared the smoke from the
building.
Woodhaven says its emergency plan
worked perfectly and that the building
had emergency heat until the furnace
could be repaired.

File Tape 37-year-old John Russell Wormuth
was scheduled to stand trial yesterday
on marijuana manufacturing and
possession charges.
Wormuth instead pleaded guilty to
the manufacturing charge Friday ... and
was given a five year jail sentence
with all but one month suspended.
Police seized more than a
pound-and-a-half of pot from his Court
Street home last May.
At the time of his arrest, Wormuth
headed up a non-profit gardening group.

with murder after a stabbing.
Police responded to a harrassment
call at an apartment complex on
Rivermont Avenue at around Eight O'
Clock last night.
They discovered 24-year-old
Ricky Bernard Evans on the main floor
of the building.
Police say he had suffered a stab
wound to the abdomen. He later died at
the hospital.
Officers arrested 42-year-old
James Edward Shaner, the third at the
scene and charged him with the crime.

his lawsuit in the case be dismissed.

Carmon Bennett's lawyers argued

he was charged last week with domestic
assault and battery.
Sheriff Lane Perry says Bowman's

Delegates yesterday gave Delegate

now has the chance to meet new
cellmates instead.

Elliston pleaded guilty to using a
communication device to solicit a
child.
He was sentenced to five years in
jail, but will serve 7 months because
of a plea deal.
Last February, an investigator
posing as a young girl chatted with
Nester several times on the internet.
Nester eventually set up a place
and time for them to meet for sex.

limits.

robber set off the alarm.

ENG#1 For the last three years, the city of
Roanoke has hired sharp shoopers to
shoot and kill deer within city limits.
But News 7 has learned city council
felt the program was too costly and
therefore decided to end it, at least
for now.

ENG#2 Roanoke animal control officers are
taking aim at the buzzard problem in
two northwest neighborhoods. In
addition to noisemakers, federal
wildlife officials are hanging effigies
in trees along the 1500 block of
Gilford Avenue and the 4900 block of
Northwood Drive.
They'll be doing this for twelve
nights.
