The goal was to have Slaughter go

the Craig County Rescue Squad wouldn't

It was about that time the squad
dipped down to just four-members.

The volunteer organization had
trouble filling positions and even
answering some if its calls.

But, now things have turned
around - the squad has 31-members.

The chief says last year the

Some fear the name change would

Roanoke musician and author, Jack
Zell has been fascinated by the
tradition ever since he was a little
boy.

So much so, that he penned a song
and accompanying book, Groundhog Eve.

The story takes a cheerful look
at the lengths some folks may go the
night before Groundhog's Day to
influence the woodchuck's prediction.

After recording the song and
producing illustrations to go with, the
work was submitted and later licensed
by the Punxsutawny Groundhog Club.

Today, Zell's in Punxsutawney for
several live performances.
