GLAXO/SMITHKLINE) Intended to be an
ally in the battle of the bulge ... a
new weight-loss drug called Alli has
just recieved the Food and Drug
Administration's approval for
over-the-counter sale. It's not a new
drug ... Alli is actually a half dose
of the prescription drug Xenical ...
that's been around since 1999. (Cathy
Nonas, Registered Dietician) "I am so
happy that we finally have something
that is over the counter." Cathy Nonas
has been putting patients on Xenical
for years ... but says the cost of the

drug put it out of reach for many more
who needed it. (grfx) According to
GlaxoSmithKline, the new version .. is
half the dose of the prescription
brand. And while a month's supply of
Xenical costs 150 to 200 dollars ..
Alli will be about 55 a month. (kenniff
standup) "Alli (Al-eye) is designed to
be used in combination with a low fat
diet and exercise. If you take the pill
and eat more than 30-percent of your
day's calories in fat ... you can
expect some unpleasant side effects."
(cathy nonas) "it's gonna block about
30-percent of the fat that you eat and
so if you're eating a high fat diet
you're going to have side effects.
you're going to have a lot of gas,
you're going to have diarhea." It works
by blocking fat absorption in the small
intestines. Some doctors worry the drug
could be abused ... and say the it may
be linked with pre-cancerous lesions.
(cathy nonas) "Clearly the FDA doesn't
think that there are any kind of health
problems associated with it, so i think
it's a pretty safe medication." (grfx)
And in a six month trial, obese people
who took it lost, on average, six

pounds more than those on placebo. Dr.

News Seven was the first to tell
you about the lost Giant Schnauzer,
Hope.

*CG locator Roanoke Co. A few weeks ago, 80- year- old Jean

Angle was coming home to Roanoke from
picking up the dog at a New York rescue
shelter, *CG locator Botetourt Co. when she wrecked along Interstate 81 January 24 near the Buchanan exit.

Hope disappeared in all of the
chaos.

Jean spent the next two weeks
canvassing the area and found out a
trucker had picked up the dog.

But the company wouldn't release the
female driver's information.

That's when law enforcement
in Botetourt County got involved.

They traced the dog to Florida and
yesterday, Jean was reunited with Hope.
