facility Friday afternoon.

When the Deputy Fire Marshall surveys
the damage, he says it's amazing
everyone got out safely.

If the kids didn't get out when they
did, he believes they would have easily
been overcome by smoke, something
firefighters struggled with upon
arrival.

kids, 80 in all, out of the building.

They were then housed next door at
the Cave Spring Volunteer Fire
Department until their parents could
pick them up.

As you might imagine, plenty of moms
and dads panicked.

WAS GOOD FOR THEM.

damage.

The fire chief allowed our cameras
inside where we saw melted cups on the
table and plenty of smoke damage.

Investigators believe a heating unit
in this window caused the fire.

The daycare director is vowing to be
back in business.

at a commercial garage on Centre Avenue
in Roanoke yesterday.

were able to put it out fairly quickly.

Crews say there is extensive
damage to the roof...

The cause of the fire is being

as well for the deadly fire in Bedford
County.

As crews continue to search for
answers, loved ones are left grieving
the loss of the victims.

29-year-old Sharon Ayers and her two
daughters, 11-year-old Ashley Howell
and 4-year-old Jennifer Ayers.

o'clock Wednesday evening.

When family arrived, they prayed
the Ayers were not trapped inside.

But that hope quickly diminshed
as they watched the home collapse.

This tragedy has devastated their
family, and they say all three will
truly be missed.

GRAPHIC=FIRE INVESTIGATION A fire yesterday in Roanoke

County kept crews working late last
night.

Crews were called to the 3400
block of Harborwood Road for a
structure fire around 10:30 yesterday
morning.

Not only was live ammunition
going off inside the house, a car
blocked the icy driveway and crews had

to find another way up.

The mother and son who shared the
home suffered no injuries, but the
house was a total loss.

Police arrested the son, Frank
Miller for an outstanding warrant,
though police say the arrest had
nothing to do with the fire.

GRAPHIC=FATAL AX State police have made an arrest

in a deadly hit-and-run accident that
tied up traffic for hours on Interstate
81 yesterday.

Authorities say a tractor trailer
sideswiped a passenger car near mile
marker 225 in Augusta County around
8:30 a-m.

The car ran off the road, swerved

back and was hit again by the same
truck which continued on down the road.

67-year-old William Albert Recker
of Palmyra (pol-MY-ruh) was killed.

Another truck driver later
spotted the truck at a rest stop and
alerted authorities.

State Police caught up with the
driver on Interstate 66.

56 year old Wayne Thomas
Ketenheim was arrested and charged with
with hit and run.

it comes to buckling up their children
properly.

About 80 percent of car seats are
not installed correctly. They are
either not in tight enough or the
harness doesn't fit properly around the
child.

Another mistake parents make is not
keeping their kids in booster seats
until they are at least 4 feet nine
inches tall and at least eight years
old.

The General Assembly is considering a
bill that would make booster seats a
requirement until this age.

Motor vehicle crashes continue to be
the number one killer of children.

Some New York residents continue
to battle nature as record lake effect
snow continues to pile up!

The weight of 5 to 8 feet of snow
is not good for anybody's roof. The
longer it sits and gets packed down,
the heavier it gets. In Mexico, New
York the roof of a home has caved in.

Some residents say they been
working as many as three hours a day
since Wednesday to remove the snow from
their houses.

Frozen fire hydrants caused
serious problems for firefighters near
Boston late Thursday night.

About 700 gallons kept inside
most fire trucks can only last about a
minute, forcing firefighters to search
for a working hydrant.

Crews finally found a working hydrant

blocks away.

Water crews said they have tried
to thaw all of the town's 900 hydrants
but hadn't gotten to the ones near the
fire.

No one was seriously hurt.

Attorneys for both Stern and Birkhead
appeared at an emergency hearing in a
California courtroom on Friday.. the
judge requested that the model's body
be preserved for at least 10 days for a
possible DNA test.

means Anna Nicole Smith s body will
remain behind the guarded doors of the
Broward County medical examiner s
office for the next several days.

evidence has been revealed to suggest a
crime occurred. We found no illegal
drugs, only prescription medicines.

An autopsy offered no quick answers
about the 39-year-old's collapse
Thursday afternoon at the Hard Rock
Hotel and Casino. The medical examiner
did not find any pills in Smith s
stomach.. and said death from natural
causes was one of three possibilities.

killed his 15-year-old friend is headed
to prison.

20-year-old Zach Linkous
was a teenager when he says he
accidentally shot 15-year-old Edward
Bertrand with a hand gun.

Linkous says he got the gun from
a friend, hoping to sell it and make
some money.

The judge sentenced him to 13
years for voluntary manslaughter, but
suspended 8 years.

Linkous will get credit for time
served, so he will only spend a little
more than 2 years in jail before
getting out.

Edward Bertrand's family say the
sentence is unfair and not nearly long
enough.

University came out a winner after
spending all week on trial as a
criminal defendant in Cleveland.

The accusations stemmed from a
time when Patty O'Toole was Dean of
Student Affairs at Notre Dame College
in Ohio.

O'Toole was acquitted. She was
accused of NOT reporting a rape on the
Notre Dame campus.

The victim asked her not to tell
police.

Following last night's verdict,
O'Toole wondered aloud why her

them either.

efforts to keep raw sewage from
overflowing into the James River.
