Even with the latest security crackdown
in the Iraqi capital growing..
insurgents are still finding ways to
bring bloodshed to Baghdad. But it's
attacks like this one.. with the fire
power to rip through a tank.. that US
military officials are now linking to
Iran. In a weekend briefing..
commanders used these slides to make
their case that the highest levels of
the Iranian leadership are outfitting
Iraqi Shiite militants with
sophisticated armor-piercing roadside
bombs that have killed more than 170
troops from the American-led coalition.
In Washington there's little dispute
about some level Iranian involvement..
but there is concern among Democrats
that the administration may be trying
to set the stage for an invasion. (Sen.
Chris Dodd (D-CT)) 22:31:22 "Basically
I'm worried there's a drum beat
beginning to role here that would
suggest somehow that unless we take
military action against Iran, that
we're going to have a growing problem
here. Debate on resolutions opposing
President Bush's troop build up in
Iraq.. is still sidelined in the Senate
after Republican maneuvering last week.
(Sen. Trent Lott (R-MS))(Courtesy "Face
The Nation") LOTT: we're ready to go
forward now. but we're not going to be
dictated to, that you can't have a vote
on an issue as critical as providing
funds for the troops. Over on the House
side, Republicans are making similar
complaints.. but debate on a nonbinding
measure expressing disapproval of the
president's troop build-up is scheduled
to go forward this week. CLOSE: The
House is expected to vote on the
resolution by week's end and Democratic
leaders say it's just a first step in
trying to bring and end to the war.
