(END SOT) The neighborhood kids nicknamed him

Licorice... and for five hours
Maplewood residents watched as a 200
pound black bear was stuck in a tree in
Bob Lynch's backyard.

((Bob Lynch/Bear in his Backyard))

We've seen deer in the backyard, but
we've never seen a bear back there.

Wildlife officials think the bear had
wandered away from South Mountain
Reservation... walked about 2 or 3
miles into Maplewood... and ended up on
Salter street about 7:30 this
morning... just as Lorraine Grossman
was making coffee.

((Lorraine Grossman/Saw Bear)) I turned
around and glanced out the bay window
in my daughters kitchen and face to
face with a big bear. looking in at me.
needless to say it startled the heck
out of me and i let out a scream.

That's when the bear climbed up the
tree. Local authorities set up a net...
went up in a cherry picker... and shot
the bear with a tranquilizer gun.

15 minutes later...

((nat)) 15:00:31 oooooohhhh, yayyyyy

...he fell from the tree... into the
net... and survived.

((Residents-no chyron)) It was amazing,
he fell right from the tree, landed
pretty hard.

I'm glad he made the net. If he had
missed the net I would have felt pretty
bad

((Kerri Lyon/Maplewood)) While this is
still a novelty for residents, officals
here and in other new jersey towns say
bears are a growing concern.

((Fred Profeta/Maplewood Mayor)) I
expect this is going to happen more and
more. We're putting a lot of pressure
on our wildlife in this state and
they're moving around, trying to find
food

Police had actually been following the
bear since yesterday when he was
spotted near the train station.

While bears do hibernate in the
winter...

((Kelcey Burguess/NJ Fish and
Wildlife)) they'll go for a little walk
and then go bck to the den. This one
probably b/c the police were keeping an

eye on it kept moving, kept getting
pushed and couldn't get back to where
it wanted to den up again.

The bear, which was tagged and tatooed,
will be taken to a state wildlife
facility... where maybe next time he'll
think twice about coming out of
hibernation.

OQ=News 7 Sports." << The Salem Civic Center once again
(END SOT) served as the host facility for the

banquet, but soon fans will have a
chance to actually check out some of
the hall of fame material year round.
The local hall's new facility located
next to Salem Memorial Stadium hopes to
open this spring by the first of May.

POSEY OYLER

This year's class of four
inductees includes Ken Macha - most
recently the Manager of the Oakland

A's. Macha was a catcher with the old
Salem Pirates and played on the 1972
championship team.

KEN MACHA

This year's other three inductees
have been valuable resources in their
respective communities. Charlie
Hammersley took care of Salem's parks
and rec department for 30 years, Wally
Beagle has run the Commonwealth Games
baseball competition for a decade and
Elbert Powell has given over 40 years
of his life to the betterment of
baseball in Franklin County.

BITES

This year's guest of honor was
former Washington Senator all-star
Frank Howard.

Hondo - hit over 400 homers and
drove in over 11 hundred runs in his
big league career.

FRANK HOWARD.

GRAPHIC=Daytona Last year, Jimmie Johnson's crew

chief Chad Knaus was suspended for the
Daytona 500 after a rules infraction
during qualifying.

Several more folks could be
following in his footsteps after the
qualifying times of Kasey Kahne and
Matt Kenseth were disallowed yesterday,
because of illegal areo- dynamic
enhancements.

Nascar's Jim Hunter say the
violations are as serious as the 48
team's a year ago.

Both will start in the rear for
the 2nd Gatorade duel on Thursday, and
Michael Waltrip could join them after
his car was impounded by Nascar.

Fox Sports No such trouble for Jeff Gordon, :00 who went out early in the round and
held down the 2nd spot for awhile, but
settled for 7th fastest.

Dale Earnhardt, Jr. laid the
hammer down, but could only record the
23rd best time.

David Gilliland was the man to
beat, pushing the limit at 186.32 miles

an hour to grab the pole position.

His Yates teammate Ricky Rudd,
after a year off, nearly knocked him
off the top spot.

But instead he'lll race right beside
him next Sunday.

The rest of the field will be set in
Thursday's qualifiers.

The couples all enrolled in
cooking school at Hotel Roanoke.

Yesterday they prepared a
five-course brunch - a little salad, a
chicken dish, a few other entrees
topped off with dessert....

And while the love birds were
working with tons ingredient they told
us the key ingredient to a good
relationship - you guessed it....it's
spending time together.
