football for Roanoke's two high schools
hasn't been quite up to par the last
few seasons.
Now, we're NOT talking about the
players, we're talking about the
facilities.

in Victory Stadium and many said it
felt like a prison because of the

Then last year, all the team's
home games had to be played on the road

number of things to minmize the impact.
For one, the field will be built in a
bowl effect to cut down on the noise.
Lights will be directional meaning
they'll be pointed toward the field and
they'll be shut off by ten o'clock.
That's why some residents are no

are on leave after two separate
shootings this weekend.

the death of 30 year old Geoffrey Aaron
Stephenson on King Street in Northeast
Roanoke.
That happened Friday night.
The other shooting happened in
Northwest Roanoke early Sunday morning
on Carroll Avenue.
One man was injured along with a
seven year old child.

Friday Night On Friday night -- police were
trying to serve an emergency custody
order on Geoffrey Aaron Stephenson.
They arrived as he was moving out
of his girlfriend's house on King
street Northeast.
Police say he ignored their
orders to stop and get down on the
ground.
Though he dropped one weapon,
they say he was going for another as
Officer Andrew Pulley shot Stephenson.
The 30-year old died about three
hours later.
Pulley's been placed on leave as
well.

A tearful Delegate Ben Cline told
members how Corporal Daniel Morris was
killed by a bomb last week while
patrolling a checkpoint in Iraq.
The Marine's mother says the
19-year-old loved the Navy, but joined
the Marines because he wanted to be in
Iraq to help Iraqis defend their
newfound Democracy.
Cline says Morris enjoyed playing
the trumpet, repairing computers and
watching Seinfeld.

Senator Brandon Bell has filed an

The amendment still doesn't go as

BAD WEATHER WITH A GROUP OF HIKERS ON
SUNDAY.
A SEARCH TEAM FOUND THE CLIMBERS
SHORTLY BEFORE *NOON* MONDAY � HUDDLED
WITH THEIR DOG VELVET � WHO�S BEING
HAILED AS A HERO.
ALONG WITH SLEEPING BAGS AND A TARP,
THE BLACK LABRADOR KEPT THE
CLIMBERS WARM AND PROVIDED COMFORT � AS
THEY BATTLED FIERCE WINDS AND
WHITE-OUT CONDITIONS.

TO THE STRANDED CLIMBERS BY CELL
PHONE � AND MANAGED TO FIND THEM BY
TRACKING THEIR MOUNTAIN LOCATOR
UNIT. THE ELECTRONIC DEVICE
TRANSMITTED SIGNALS � PINPOINTING THE
CLIMBERS� EXACT LOCATION.

MOUNT HOOD IS KNOWN FOR BEING
UNFORGIVING. BACK IN DECEMBER, THREE
CLIMBERS WENT MISSING � ONE OF THEM
DIED OF HYPOTHERMIA � THE OTHER TWO
WERE NEVER FOUND.
RESCUERS RUSHED TO GET THESE THREE
CLIMBERS DOWN THE MOUNTAIN � BEFORE
AN AVALANCHE OR THE NEXT SNOW STORM
HIT. ONE OF THEM WAS TREATED AT
THE HOSPITAL FOR A HEAD INJURY, BUT IS
SAID TO BE DOING FINE.

at least 10 points and 10 boards a

front of a large group of red and white
clad family members and friends from
the Star City. Then at game's end she
found herself getting interviewed on
the ACC television network by none
other than Charlene Curtis - a Roanoke
native and Fleming grad herself.

Khadijah left Fleming before her
senior season and finished at Woodrow
Wilson high in Portsmouth. But she
still considers the Star City home.

Khadijah's move to Portsmouth
confused many, but she did it to be
close to her dad - who had just been
diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease.
Khadijah's says his situation and
watching her head coach battle breast
cancer for the second time in her life
this season - have made her a different
person.
