GRAPHIC=Shooting For the second time in nearly two
days Roanoke police are at the center
of a shooting.
The latest incident unfolded two
hours after midnight Sunday on Carrol
Avenue.

Roanoke police officers resonded to a
911 call reporting a man with a gun.
Once inside, police say they
encountered a gunman who shot at one of
them.
That officer then returned
gunfire, hitting the man.
All three officers then retreated
down the hallway when they heard
another shot.
At which point, someone advised them
that there was still a 7 year-old child
in the home.

A neighbor brought the other two
children inside where he provided them
shelter.
Emergency crews took the
7year-old and the gunman to the
hospital.
Police have not released their
names or condition.
As for the officers, none of them
were injured during the exchange.

one weekend prompted Roanoke police
chief Joe Gaskins to publicly address
the situation.

The first officer involved
shooting happened Friday night on King
Street when police arrived at a home to
serve papers.
They say 30-year-old Geoffrey
Aaron Stephenson came out with a gun
and another weapon and refused to
listen to commands to stop.
Officer Andrew Pulley Jr fired
his weapon killing Stephenson.
Police Chief Joe Gaskins says
back-to-back officer-related shootings
are not common for the Roanoke P-D.

to the call yesterday morning have not
been named.
They are however on
administrative leave along with Officer
Pulley who was involved in the Friday
night shooting.
Separate investigations into both
of these incidents are underway.

GRAPHIC=Drugs Another suspect is arrested in
Halifax county's crackdown on a
suspected drug and theft ring.
TAKE APRISA TAKE APRISA
This man, Christopher Stanley of
Scottsburg is the seventh person
arrested so far.
He and others are accused of
manufacturing, selling and possessing a
controlled substance over the course of
the last two years.
The Sheriff's Department says
more arrests are likely in the near
future.

helping children learn through reading.
That is, reading daily comic
strips.

Krantz are the two people behind "The
Amazing Adventures of Scorpy Bug."
The comic strip runs each day in
the News and Advance in Lynchburg.
The comics are based on the

Standards of Learning.
The biggest challenge is scaling
down the educational lessons to just
125 words.

morning.

a fire broke out in a classroom.

evacuated, and no one got hurt.
Kidd's Restoration worked night
and day to clean the facility.

horizon to help reduce Roanoke's risk
of flooding.

2005 President Bush's introduced
budget includes more than ten- million
dollars to continue the city's flood
reduction project.
Congressman Bob Goodlatte will
push for the money to stay in as the
budget moves through Congress.
Roanoke is already seeing
businesses expand because of the
project- which includes plans for a 10-
mile greenway along the Roanoke River.
