Mori Mickelson and her husband Danny
had a beautiful baby boy--and loved

spending time together at home.

(nats home video--family)

Mori: "Hi, here we are..."

(vo)

But the more they stayed inside their
New York City apartment, the

sicker they got.

(sot disk 1, 18:49:48)

Mori: "I would get dizzy, I would get
headaches, just feel nauseous."

(sot disk 1, 19:02:21)

Danny: "I couldn't focus basically, my
mind was floating away on me."

(vo)

Turns out, the air in their apartment
was contaminated with a toxic

solvent leaking from the dry cleaner
downstairs. It's called

perchloroethylene--or perc...and it's
used by 3 out of 4 dry cleaners

nationwide.

(sot tape 1, 12:26:12)

Judith Schreiber: "I would classify
perc as a neurotoxin."

(vo)

Judith Schreiber is the chief scientist
of environmental protection for

New York's Attorney General.

She says dry cleaners love perc because
it washes delicate fabrics

without shrinking or fading.

But too often, perc vapors can leak
into nearby residences and

offices--and Schreiber says long-term
exposure can cause serious harm.

(sot tape 1, 12:22:49)

Schreiber: "You're at risk for
neurological effects, liver and kidney

illness, and increased cancer risk."

(vo)

You may have gotten a whiff of perc's
strong, fresh scent at your

cleaners--

but once perc evaporates into the air,
you can't always smell it.

Mori had no idea her home was so
contaminated--until one day, she

literally collapsed from the fumes--and
was rushed to the hospital.

(sot disk 1, 18:55:23)

Mori: "The city department of health
did tests on us and our neighbors,

and it was in our breath and our urine
and in my breast milk and my

neighbor's breast milk, it was
basically everywhere."

(vo)

And even =wearing= dry cleaned clothes

may put you at risk.

In the first study of its

kind--Consumer Reports measured perc
emissions

from freshly dry-cleaned blazers--and
the results were startling.

(sot disk 4, 1:21:48)

Jean Halloran/Consumer Reports: "We
found that there was a small but

definitely increased risk of cancer
from wearing freshly dry cleaned

clothes once or twice a week."

(vo)

But dry cleaners say that's junk
science.

(sot disk 2, 19:40:26)

Tracy: "How safe is perc?"

Nora Nealis: "When handled properly,
extremely safe."

(vo)

Nora Nealis runs the National Cleaners
Association.

She says studies of workers at dry
cleaners have found no increased risk

of cancer--even after years of perc
exposure.

(sot disk 2, 19:43:45)

Nealis: "I have friends and neighbors
and family members who are in the

dry cleaning industry, I have no
compunctions whatsoever about their

health or safety."

(vo)

But some regulators aren't buying it.

Last month, California became the first
state in the nation to ban

perc--phasing it out at dry cleaners
over the next 15 years.

It wants them to use
environmentally-safer methods like "wet

cleaning"--which washes dry clean-only
garments using special soap--and

plain old water.

(sot disk 2, 19:49:12)

Nealis: "Wet cleaning is great for
casual wear, your khakis, your

sweaters, your cotton man-tailored
shirts."

(vo)

But it's not so good for structured
garments.

Nealis showed us what wet cleaning did

to this designer jacket:

(sot disk 2, 20:03:05)

Nealis: "You have some serious
shrinkage going on here. What it
doesn't

have is that nice, finished, like-new
look that you went to the cleaners

for."

(vo)

Another option? Stop buying clothes
that require dry cleaning. That's

what Mori Mickelson did.

(sot disk 2, 19:28:09)

Tracy: "How many dry cleaned clothes do
you have in your closet?"

Mori: "None of these are dry clean, the
only dry clean clothes I have

are these."

Tracy: "One pair of pants?"

Mori: "One pair of pants."

(vo)

Though the dry cleaner below no longer
uses a perc machine, she still

worries about her family's exposure.

(sot disk 1, 18:52:35)

Tracy: "Do you think about the long
term effects of this?"

Mori: "All the time. When one of us
gets sick, I think, could this be

something related to perc? My greatest
fear is that one of us is going

to get cancer from it."

GRAPHIC=NEXTEL CUP The beating and banging at the

end of the Daytona 500 bruised a number
of racecars and probably a few egos.

But the Nextel Cup Drivers have to put
all that behind them and move onto the
next race in California.

While there are a number of
drivers who enjoy the plate racing at
places like Daytona, some are looking
forward to getting away from the bump
drafting.

You might recognize this building,
it used to be the Iroquois Club along
Campbell Avenue.....it will now be home
to whoever opts to buy one of the 15
units in Waldvogel's latest
development.

And if you cruise through, you'll
see some of the old features, like the
original elevator shaft and hardwood
floors.

But you'll also see some new
features like stainless steel
appliances and exposed brick.

Prices vary depending on size,
but start at 149-thousand. Even though
yesterday was the open house, three are
already sold.
