The trial for 30- year old
William Joseph Gutersloh got underway
today, he's accused of killing 23- year
old Radford University student Lori
Pleasants.

Her body was found by friends in
her apartment in June of 2000.

Gutersloh is also charged with
defiling a corpse and perjury.

(END SOT) Gutersloh didn't have much expression

in front of the jury.

Even after Commonwealth's
Attorney Chris Rehak opened saying this
murder case is not about science rather
human nature and Gutersloh's loose
lips.

The state plans to present
evidence that Gutersloh told two

friends and a co-worker that he indeed
kill Pleasants.

CHRIS REHAK, COMMONWEALTH'S ATTORNEY

THE DEFENDANT TOLD HIM IN NEW YORK 500
MILES AWAY THAT HE WENT TO COLLECT A
DEBT THAT THERE WAS A PHYSICAL
CONFRONTATION WITH A GIRLFRIEND. HE
KILLED HER BY STRANGULATION.

However, defense attorneys say
the case IS all about science and DNA,
and it excludes Gutersloh.

THERE WAS DNA FOUND UNDER HER
FINGERNAILS. IT'S NOT HIS. THERE WAS
DNA FOUND IN THE BED IN WHICH SHE WAS
SLEEPING THE SHEETS WHERE SHE DIED.
IT'S NOT HIS.

Gutersloh is also charged with
defiling a corpse.

The medical examiner who
performed Pleasants autopsy took the
stand and said the cause of death was
strangulation.

He said the crime scene appeared
staged....and that Pleasants wrists
were cut after she died.

APPEAR TO BE WHEN SHE WAS ALIVE. THE

WOUNDS DO NOT APPEAR WHEN SHE WAS ALIVE

WHICH DOESN'T LOOK APPROPRIATE EITHER.

The Commonweath's Attorney also
said Gutersloh had a code of silence
with the three people he confessed to
about strangling Pleasants.

One man received a coded letter
allegedly from Gutersloh, which will be
presented for evidence by the state.

about a story News Seven has been
following closely.

One of the Floyd County boys
fighting cancer lost the battle this
afternoon....

VO-NAT Joshua Cantrell was taken off

life support Sunday evening and we're
told the family shared some special
moments with him before he died this
afternoon.

Obviously a very sad turn
for all who knew and supported Josh
throughout his treatment.

But the group, Same Fight,

dedicated to helping raise awareness
and funds for the boys will go
on.......that's because Chance Harman
is still undergoing treatment.

Joshua's Grandfather, Alan
Cantrell is the Head Coach of the Floyd
County Girls Basketball Team which is
undefeated this season.

The Lady Buffalos have supported
their Coach and his family all season
and will try and continue their season
this Friday when they play a State
Quarterfinal Game against J.J. Kelly at
Christiansburg High School.

called global warming a myth.

set up a family care practice in
Franklin County, but the welcome wagon
hasn't come around just yet.

has recommended a two cent
increase....from 39 to 41 cents.

The commission is also urging the
post office to establish a so called
"forever stamp"....which means, if it
happens....you don't have to keep

buying those two or three cent stamps.

It would not show a denomination
and would be good for mailing bills and
letters permanently...even if the rates
go up.

The stamp would only cost
whatever the first class rate is a the
time you buy it.

tipping off in Tampa, Florida.

The Top of the League has a
distinct Commonwealth Flavor to it.
With both Virginia Tech and U-V-A tied
for first place in the Conference along
with North Carolina.

That is just part of the
wackiness that has been the A-C-C this
season. The overall talent of the
league is proved by the fact that 8 of
the 12 teams have been ranked at one
point in the Season.

The Cavaliers and Hokies both
have 2 games left in the regular season
including a meeting against each other
in Charlottesville on Thursday.

Both Teams have already clinched
byes in the first round of the A-C-C
tournament and both have rankings this
week. The Hokies are back in both
polls at number 21.

The Wahoo's are number 25 in the
Coaches Poll.

Tech Softball Team. She also continue

honor and the 8th time in her 3-year
Career that she has been named the

archaeologist claim they have
discovered the human remains of Jesus,

movie "We Were Soldiers."

Medal of Honor....the nation's highest
military honor....to 74 year old Bruce
Crandall for his service in Vietnam.

As a 32 year old helicopter
pilot, Crandall volunteered for high
risk flights that are credited with

battle at La Drang Valley in November
19-65.
