GRAPHIC=GEORGE PREAS There have been a number of

athletes from the Star City that have
put Roanoke on the Map.

One of those includes George
Preas.

This past weekend, the former
Hokie and Baltimore Colt passed away at
a South Roanoke Nursing home after a
lengthy, courageous battle with
Parkinson's disease.

Mike Stevens tells us about a man
who was Roanoke to the Core--playing
Sandlot Football at Fallon Park,
followed by a stellar career at
Jefferson High and Virginia Tech before
joining the Colts in 19- 55.

OQ=NEWS 7 SPORTS. << Preas was a member of Baltimore's
(END SOT) first ever world championship teams in

1958 and 1959.

He played offensive line on those
teams helping protect his good friend
Johnny Unitas, who is shown here in
July of 1964 helping Preas give a
football clinic at Victory Stadium.

Preas and the Colts also played
the Steelers at Victory Stadium back in
1961.

And after the 1958 season, Preas
was voted the Colts' "Unsung Hero
Award."

The Gentle Giant was part of the
1954 Hokies' team that went unbeaten
with an 8-0-and-1 record that season -
the last unbeaten team before the 1999
squad at Tech went 11 and 0 in the
regular season.

Preas, was well into his battle
with Parkinson's disease at that time
but still took time to speak with us
about his pride in the Hokies.

In September of 2003, the Hokies
honored him during the Texas A&M game,
and although George was unable to
attend - his wife and son expressed his
pride and appreciation.

BITES

Preas is a member of the Tech
hall of fame and the Virginia Sports
Hall of Fame in Portsmouth where the
number 60 uniform he wore during his
final season with the Colts in encased
in glass.
