Daylight Saving Time BAM weeks early this year.

The change is designed to aid in
the energy conservation effort.

But not everyone sees the change
as beneficial.

*CG standup Bob Grebe
bgrebe@wdbj7.com Kimberly, the change to the
Daylight Saving time schedule was
motivated by the potential to cut down
on energy usage.

ENG#=1 VO NAT

*CG locator Roanoke

The rationale is, by making the
sun set one hour later, it would reduce
the period between sunset and bedtime
by one hour.

Therefore, less electricity would
be used for lighting and the use of
appliances.

Applachian Power officials do not
think that will be the case.

Congressman Rick Boucher told me
that he fought against the Daylight
Saving change because of the potential

hazard to children waiting in the dark
for their school bus and the negative
impact it has on farmers.

So while it remains to be seen
whether or not the Daylight Saving time
has an impact on conservation, there
are proven methods of reducing energy
use that are rather easy to implement.

In one sense we'll be using less
energy, but also expending more
energy... in a good way, burning
calories by getting out and being more
active in the evening as apposed to
being couped up in the house infront of

A California Energy Commission
study from 2005 stated by moving the

The report cites studies from the

those findings are not in-line with

Congressman Rick Boucher does not
anticipate it either and fought against
the measure in House energy-committee
meetings in '05.

In a phone conversation, Boucher
told me the negatives far outweigh any
potential benefits from the earlier
time change.

The negatives he cited are
safety-concerns for children waiting in

the dark for the school bus to
arrive... and also the objections
raised by many farmers.

Congress has allowed for the
measure to be reverted back to the
traditional Daylight Saving schedule if
it is found to be more beneficial...

But Boucher said he does not see
that happening.

The rationale is, by making the
