manslaughter after a deadly scuffle in
Pittsylvania County

Investigators say a 17-year-old
got into a scuffle yesterday afternoon
with 24-year-old Jeremy Antonia Davis
outside Davis' home in Sutherlin.
The teenager put Davis in a
headlock and when the teen let go,
Davis collapsed.

Davis died at Danville Regional Medical
Center.
The 17-year-old is being held
at a juvenile detention center.
Sheriff's deputies are not releasing

called to a home on the 900 block of
Tennessee Street this morning.

According to officials, no one
was in the house when the fire fighters
arrived on the scene.
The flames were contained shortly
after.
Firefighters did have to deal
with heavy smoke billowing out of the
home.

The cause is still under
investigation.

car accident in Alleghany County.
The accident happened yesterday
on Route 220 just North of Route 687.
Police say 44-year-old Debra
Bartley ran off the road, over
corrected and struck a guard rail.
She then went down an embankment
and struck a tree.
Bartley was pronounced dead at
the scene.
Police say she was not wearing a
seatbelt.

for some students in New Jersey.

team from Ohio.

A California Energy Commission
study from 2005 stated by moving the
clock ahead one hour, we can cut the
amount of electricity we consume each
day.
The report cites studies from the
1970s by the US Department of
Transportation that show the country's
electricity usage is trimmed by one
percent EACH DAY with Daylight Saving
Time.
Appalachian Power officials say
those findings are not in-line with
consumption patterns found here
locally.

Those factors include varying
weather patterns and consumption rates
based on lifestyle.
The energy saving measures may
only be a small percentage per
household, but some legislators are
hoping the added three weeks in the
spring and additional week in the fall
will create greater cumulative
conservation effect nationwide.

Congressman Rick Boucher does not
anticipate it either and fought against
the measure in House energy-committee
meetings in '05.
In a phone conversation, Boucher
told me the negatives far outweigh any
potential benefits from the earlier
time change.
The negatives he cited are
safety-concerns for children waiting in
the dark for the school bus to
arrive... and also the objections
raised by many farmers.
Congress has allowed for the
measure to be reverted back to the
traditional Daylight Saving schedule if
it is found to be more beneficial...
But Boucher said he does not see
that happening.
