proposed Transportation Bill came
barreling through Hillsville today.

about the proposed Route 58 bypass.
But he was also touting the
changes he wants to make to lawmaker's
two and a half billion dollar
transportation bill.
That prompted Republicans to

If approved, money for part of
the plan would come out of the general
obligation fund.
Kaine says that would take away
from programs like education and public
safety.
The republicans say for years
general fund money has been used for

County will not spend any time in
prison for molesting a teenage boy he
was tutoring.
70-year-old Kenneth Payne was the
pastor at New Prospect Baptist Church
in Pleasant View.
He was convicted in January of
taking indecent liberties with a
17-year-old boy.
The teenager met Payne through the
county's Homebound School program.
Payne got a five-year suspended
sentence today, along with two years
supervised probation.
He will have to register as a sex
offender.

Whether it was blueberry pie,
chocolate pudding or cherry, students
who could memorize 30 numbers or more
in the Pi equation got to take their
best shot at principal David Merritt.
One student memorized SIXTY
numbers, earning her two pie tosses.
Merritt created the challenge to
get students excited about math.
This was the first year for the
pie toss, and the school hopes to keep
it a tradition.

basketball tournaments opened up in
Richmond at the VCU Siegel Center.

Last Week For the most part - the 75
:00 hundred seat facility worked well for
the tournaments.
But by the time Championship
Saturday rolled around with six back to
back games including one involving a
Richmond team - there were all kinds of
problems.
Tickets were sold on a general
admission basis so a person could
literally watch three or four or even
six games.
And that's exactly what a lot of
people did.
The crowds didn't turn over as
expected and hundreds of fans - many
with tickets in hand - were left
standing outside on Broad Street with
no chance of seeing a game.
This problem affected a number of
Danville, Hidden Valley and William
Fleming fans.

One other concern is the cost of
just getting a team, students,
cheerleaders and band members to the
tournament.
The estimated cost is $10,000 per
school.
Hidden Valley Principal Rhonda
Stegall had to double that to $20
thousand because the Titans had two
teams in the event.
Currently, the Virginia High
School League only compensates teams $1
per mile.
By the way - the tournament will
stay in Richmond through 2015.
