in shambles after several resignations.

VO-NAT The controversy centered around
whether to fire the town's police
chief.
According to chief Lynn Frith, the
tension started two weeks ago when
Mayor Patricia Hogan ordered him to
cite more speeders along Route 220.

first people he caught flying down the
highway was the mayor's husband Robert,
who is also a councilmember.
Following last night's town
council closed session Mayor Hogan and
Council member Sarah Eames announced
they had decided to step down.

manager has submitted his resignation.
Robert Collins' resignation is
effective April 22nd.
In a statement, Collins said "a
chance to work outside of municipal
government is available and I feel that
I should pursue this new opportunity."
Collins came to Martinsville in
July of 20-04...succeeding 10 year city
manager Earl Reynolds.

goodbye to some eyesores. Four
run-down houses in the Hill City may
soon have a new owner ... the city
itself.

Last night, City council voted to
start the acquisition process for the
condemned homes as part of its spot
blight program.
The Housing Authority identifies
properties that are in serious need of
repair and tries to buy them from the
owner so they can be fixed up and
resold.
If a deal can't be reached, the
next step is using eminent domain.
City leaders are concerned that a
new measure restricting eminent domain
could hurt the spot blight program.
They've written the governor asking
him to amend the language.

planning extra speed patrols on the
highway a couple of weekends from now.
Troopers will saturate 200 miles
of the Interstate 64 between Staunton
and the Norfolk area.

July It's the fifth wave of "Operation
Air, Land and Speed", similar to the
extra patrols seen last year on
highways like Interstate 81.
State Police hope the roving
patrols, radar, and aerial speed
enforcement will help reduce the number

The I-64 effort is set for March
23rd and 24th.

the region's higher electric bills.

The State Corporation Commission
has received more than 25- thousand
complaint calls, e-mails and letters
from western Virginia- about Applachian
Power.
A rate increase that took effect
in November has sent residential bills
soaring.
In fact, customers bills have
gone up between 21 percent to 35
percent.
If the S-C-C decides the increase
is too high, customers would get their
money back with interest.

the former rink reopens.

Preparedness Day, and we wanted to find
out if people were truly prepared.

poll, 81% say their household would
know what to do if a tornado warning
was issued.
Likewise, 73% of those polled say
they have a safe place to go during
severe weather.
Most of those surveyed get their
warnings from TV or Radio, while 2%
actually receive alerts from a siren.

Roanoke County.
