yesterday along Route 220 in Roanoke
and Roanoke County.

The fire broke out just before four
o'clock between Hunting Hills and Buck
Mountain Road.

Firefighters say a burning truck
driving south on Route 220 set off
several brush fires.

Firefighters quickly got those fires
contained, after they'd consumed about
five acres.

determining who placed two homemade
bombs in a local park.

A maintenance crew found the
crude explosive devices in January at
the entrance to Whitt River Bend Park.

One of the devices was partially
detonated.

Pearisburg Police turned the
evidence over to the State Police crime
lab.

Pearisburg's police chief says
the homemade bombs could have hurt
someone, and he's hoping someone in the
community has information.

He'd paid for breakfast at a
restaurant in Botetourt County one
morning last year. The waiter swiped
the magnetic strip on his credit card
TWICE.

are caused by animals, such as
squirrels.

In most cases the animal makes

contact with energized equipment and
then comes in contact with another
surface.

Not only is the animal

We're told in just the few days
she's been at the shelter, she's
already made a difference.

when Sherry Slaughter, the County's
first ever Adoption Specialist was
hired and fired in all of three months'
time.

Hicks fills that position..and
the first change she made was putting
beds into the kennels.

But that's just the
beginning, Hicks also wants to broaden
the volunteer base, get rescue groups
to take in some dogs and to make sure
everything's okay with new owners once
the animals leave.
