following an accidental house fire in
Salem.

yesterday morning.

Seth Pendleton was just about to
turn in for the night when a neighbor
alerted him of the fire.

escaped with his life, his cat didn't
make it out.

The building had five apartments,
and all of the other residents were
unharmed.

The Red Cross has stepped in to
help.

Fire crews believe the fire may
have started on a lower level and
quickly spread throughout the home.

The fire left about 160-thousand
dollars in damage.

GRAPHIC=Fatal Accident A 48-year-old woman was killed in


an accident yesterday morning in
Halifax County.

Police say Debora Foster was

walking along Route 58 when a car hit
her shortly after midnight.

She died at the scene.

Police say Foster was wearing
dark clothing and standing in the
middle of the road.

No charges will be filed against
the 16-year-old driver.

Roanoke neighborhood has the community
asking police to take action.

Police say this latest incident
occurred around 11:00 Friday night in
the 1900 block of Hanover Avenue.

People were home at the time, but
nobody was hurt.

Neighbors tell us they heard
about 10 to 15 guns shots...then the
criminals sped away.

Police say that shooting was a
case of mistaken identity.

Nobody was hurt then either, but
the bullets left about 13 thousand
dollars in damage.

Ridge Parkway is getting tougher these
days, because of delays in clean-up
from winter weather.

Amherst and Nelson counties are shut
down as workers try to clean up tree
limbs and debris following a February
ice storm.

Part of the reason why the pick
up process is taking so long is because
the district says it only has three

rural areas would only see about a
fourth of the money, even though 61
percent of the traffic fatalities in
the last five years occurred on rural
roads.

Advocates for smaller localities
say legislators need to do better.

Tim Kaine told the Associated

26th deadline.

mess kit less than a mile from the camp
late Saturday.


A Highway Patrol helicopter

region is dangerously low on blood
supplies and donations are needed.

A spokeswoman says they have only
about half a day's worth of some types,
and only a few hours worth of type O.

O is unique in that anyone can
receive it.

The Red Cross is constantly
seeking donations since blood only
stays good for five days.
