He is alive- and by all

OQ=McGrady, North Carolina < (END SOT) old Michael Auberry was escorted into a

waiting ambulance.

"He was found somewhere along this
basin here ..."

The Boy Scout's survival skills
seemingly paid off. He made it through

three nights lost and alone in the
North Carolina wilderness ... only to

be found, not just alive, but well.

(sot Dave Bower / Park Ranger)

"The first thing we did was reunited
michael with his family, that was

our number one goal."

(standup/karen brown/mcgrady, nc)

With the help of a dog, rescuers found
Michael walking along a creek ...

within a mile and a half of the
campsite where he disappeared. He was

weak and dehydrated, but in good
condition.

Tina White / National Park Service )

"Think about all the days he's gone
without food, probably very limited
water supply out there two, and aside
from that, this has been a very

traumatic situation of even having to
stay outside overnight."

With temperatures dipping into the 20's
the first two nights ...

Michael's father held out hope ...
saying his son was wearing two jackets
... though he wasn't carrying a
survival kit. Wednesday's forecast
called for rain ... putting searchers
under the gun.

Reunited at a park ranger station ...
Michael's parents were among the first
to hear how he endured the rugged
terrain on his own. All along, family
and rescuers hoped for a happy outcome
and in the end.. they finally got an
amazing story of survival. Karen
