Even on their coal-covered faces, you
can see the anguish.

More than 100 of their comrades have
perished in Russia's deadliest

mining disaster in a decade.

(VIDEO FROM NTV )

A methane gas explosion tore through
the Siberian coal mine Monday,

nearly a thousand feet DEEP
underground, where some 200 miners were

working.

(VIDEO FROM APTN )

It's unclear how many more miners are
still trapped below. At least one

more survivor was pulled out Tuesday.

Rescue attempts have been hampered by
smoke, pockets of gas and

collapsed tunnels.

Anxious relatives could only look on as
vans delivered more of the dead.

A British man and his interpreter are
among the victims. They were there

examining a British HAZARD MONITORING
SYSTEM before the blast went off.

An initial prosecutor's probe suggests
the miners failed to follow

safety procedures.

Although Russia is no stranger to
mining disasters, THIS mine only

opened in 2002, in celebration of
President Vladimir Putin's 50th

birthday.

(russian pool - for cbs affiliates and

NATPOP: PUTIN

But on this day...the President
mourned, saying this 'terrible tragedy

echoes in the hearts of Russians with
pain.'

(aptn video)

And a painful few days it has been for
Russia....a fire that swept

through a nursing home Tuesday killed
more than 60 people...and a

weekend plane crash of an aging
commercial jet killed six...but 50

survivors were trapped upside down
before help arrived.

President Putin has ordered a Kremlin
investigation into all three

disasters...to find out why so much
tragedy has unfolded so

quickly...and whether it could have
been avoided.
