The controversy stems from a new
dog park.

for dogs but in Roanoke man's
bestfriend must be on leash at all
times and that has angered many pet
owners.

So the city has gone ahead and
created an off-leash dog area in the

southwest corner of Fishburn Park.

It's about a half an acre and is
marked with four corner posts.

Many pet owners have been
fighting for a place to let their dogs
roam free for years, but many nearby
residents have balked at the idea.

GRAPHIC=Fatal Accident An accident in Bedford County

claims the lives of a mother and her
son.

It happened this afternoon along
Route 24 in the Stewartsville area.

Police believe the driver ran off
the side of the road, overcorrected,
crossed the center line and hit two
trees.

The driver, 30 year old Melisa
Faye Abshire, and her nine year old son
Jack Eldridge Sheets the third were
killed in the accident.

No other cars or people were
involved.

Both lanes of Virginia 24 were
blocked for about two hours....but have
since been reopened.

train cars derailed this morning.

The train was heading east from
Hinton, West Virginia to Clifton Forge.

Seventeen cars carrying

A 42-year old state probation
officer from Fieldale pled guilty this
afternoon.

Carlton Riley admitted he tried
to buy more than two pounds of cocaine.

He paid an informant for a kilo
of fake coke, led police on a
high-speed chase and threw the stuff
out the window.

Riley faces a minimum five year
sentence, possible 40 years.

Former Sheriff's Deputy Steven
Preston also pled guilty today as part
of the racketeering conspiracy.

The 37-year old Bassett resident
tipped off fellow deputies and drug
dealers about a controlled delivery of
the drug Ketamine in late 2003.

Preston faces up to 20-years in
prison.

criminal charges for a Troutville teen.

McMaster has been charged with
malicious wounding.

Lord Botetourt High School.

According to reports, McMaster
came up to another student in the
cafeteria during lunch and punched him
one time.

The fight resulted in serious
injury to the victim.

McMaster turned himself into
authorities the next day.

He's due in court May 7th.

Tillman was killed by friendly

pet-food industry issued a massive
product recall.

Veterinarians in our area are
still being overrun by anxious pet
owners.

At Harris Animal Hospital in
Roanoke, the phones have been ringing
off the hook.

Dr. Charles Harris says four
animals, like "Penny," have come in...
amid fears of contaminated food made by
Menu Foods.

One symptom is renal failure.

Dr. Harris says it can be tough
to tell whether its from normal aging
of a pet or from tainted food.

investigation is focusing on wheat
gluten...a source of protein and a

They say the wheat gluten itself
