son were killed in a car wreck in
Bedford County today.

It happened this afternoon on
Route 24 in the Stewartsville
area.....Police say the driver ran off
the side of the road, overcorrected and
ran down an embankment, hitting two
trees.

30 year old Melissa Faye Abshire
and her son Jack Eldridge Sheets the
third were both pronounced dead at the
scene.

Police say they WERE wearing
seatbelts.

Both lanes of Virginia 24 were

blocked for a few hours in the accident
area but have since been reopened.

sporting goods store helped police nab
three 18-year-olds accused of stealing
thousands of dollars worth of baseball
equipment.

The thieves broke into the
Jefferson Forest High School storage
building over the weekend and made off
with bats, gloves, uniforms and
personal items belonging to the junior
varsity team.

Most of the items were returned
today ... their coach says the incident
has brought the team closer together.

Roanoke, the phones have been ringing
off the hook.

Dr. Charles Harris says four
animals, like "Penny," have come in...
amid fears of contaminated food made by
Menu Foods.

One symptom is renal failure.

to tell whether its from normal aging
of a pet or from tainted food.

after several train cars derailed this
morning.

they've caught an arsonist.

Investigators arrested 58 year
old Esaw Jacob Ayers this week.

He's accused of starting numerous
daytime fires inside homes in the
Orchard Gap and the Wards Gap section
of the county.

Ayers is being held at the New
River Valley Jail without bond.

after a weekend incident in Botetourt
County.

faces several charges including
obstruction of justice, recklessly
handling a firearm and a felony count
of attempted malicious wounding.

Lane early Saturday morning.

A woman reported Lemon was
sitting in front of her home
threatening to shoot himself.

No one was injured, but a shot
was fired.

Investigators say Lemon
eventually barricaded himself in the
woman's home before he was apprehended
by police.

He's due in court on May 25th.

charges against a man accused of
receiving money for procuring
prostitution.

Brian Eugene Schmitz was arrested
in February after a sting at his home
on Pawtucket Drive.

Police say Schmitz advertised on
the Internet site Craigslist for sexual
partners for a woman he described as
his wife.

A Roanoke man allegedly paid
Schmitz 150 dollars on two occasions,
then contacted police.

An undercover officer says he went
to Schmitz's home February 10th and
made the same deal.

A judge today certified two felony
charges to the April grand jury.

Henry County public corruption
case...as two more former lawmen have
admitted their roles in the scandal.

A 42-year old state probation
officer from Fieldale pled guilty this
afternoon.

Carlton Riley admitted he tried
to buy more than two pounds of cocaine.

He paid an informant for a kilo
of fake coke, led police on a
high-speed chase and threw the stuff
out the window.

Riley faces a minimum five year
sentence, possible 40 years.

Former Sheriff's Deputy Steven
Preston also pled guilty today as part
of the racketeering conspiracy.

The 37-year old Bassett resident
tipped off fellow deputies and drug
dealers about a controlled delivery of
the drug Ketamine in late 2003.

Preston faces up to 20-years in
prison.

Mark Sisson as the new chief in a
closed session Tuesday night.

At age 34, Sisson is one of the
youngest people to ever hold the title
of police chief in the town.

Sisson has been with the

children.

He is also a 1990 graduate of
Shawsville High School and a former
marine.

He will be officially sworn in,
