Fire Investigators have
determined a fire in Bland County was
an accident.

The fire killed 167 dogs.

The fire chief does not suspect
foul play and believes it started from
a kerosene heater left inside the
building to keep the animals warm.

The fire broke out early Wedneday
morning around 4:30 and it took fire
crews about 4 hours to get under
control.

salvage this, what used to be a large
dog kennel.

It's the largest dog breeding
farm in the county and part of a
family-run business.

The owner is Amish and does not
want to appear on camera but says he

ENGULFED BY THIS BILLOW OF SMOKE THAT

animals at 1:15 that morning and
everything was fine.

But within hours that quickly
changed.

And by the time the first fire
crews arrived they could still hear the
dogs yelping inside.

THE ANIMALS WERE INSIDE. FORTUNATELY

BURNING BUILDING BUT YOU KNEW THEY WERE

for a year and says the facility was
USDA inspected.

And the county says it had never
recieved any complaints against them,
adding that the Schmuckers were in full
compliance.

his home and held police at bay for
five hours last summer was sentenced
today as a career criminal.


The sentence of almost 22-years may be
the first time Ricky Edward Davis has
had the book thrown at him.

"It's a phone book," Judge Sam Wilson
said, referring to the length of Davis'
prior record: 16 convictions...half of
them felonies.

month in the case against 18-year-old
Andrew Washburn - now forensic evidence
involving boot impressions have been
submitted.

According to documentation
submitted in district court, a boot

print found at the rape scene shows
the same size, design and sole
characteristics- as a pair taken from
Washburn and submitted to the lab for
examination.

But the same report says a
definite conclusion cannot be drawn.

Washburn is accused of taking a
woman from Clifton Forge and raping her
in a remote area of Botetourt County in
January.

students out of school today.

At around noon, someone with a
male voice called 9-1-1, saying there
was a bomb at Salem High School.

The school was evacuated. Canine

Late this afternooon, Kentucky
head coach Tubby Smith announced that
he's leaving Kentucky with four years
left on his contract to coach at the
University of Minnesota.

In 10 years at Kentucky, Smith
won 263 and lost just 83. His teams
went to the NCAA Tournament every
season, and won the 1998 national
championship.

But the Wildcats havn't been back
to the Final Four since 98 and some
people have been calling for his
dismissal.

They won't have a chance to fire
him now - his new job at Minnesota will

pay him $1 point 8 million a season.

arrested on a drunken dirving charge in
Jupiter, Florida early this morning.
