son were killed in a single- vehicle
wreck in Bedford County.

on Route 24 in the Stewartsville area.
Police say the driver ran off the
side of the road, overcorrected and ran
down an embankment, hitting two trees.
30-year-old Melissa Faye Abshire
and her son Jack Eldridge Sheets the
third were both pronounced dead at the
scene.
Police say they WERE wearing
seatbelts.

being released from an area hospital
for observation.

threatening to shoot himself.
One shot was fired before
investigators say Lemon barricaded
himself in the woman's Rainbow Forest

cleaning up after several train cars
derailed.

close to South Lexington Avenue in the
downtown area.
The train was heading east from
Hinton, West Virginia to Clifton Forge.
Seventeen cars carrying

and charged with stealing thousands of
dollars of athletic equipment from
Jefferson Forest High School over the
weekend.

The teens reportedly broke into a
fieldhouse and stole bats, gloves,
uniforms and personal items from the
J-F junior varsity baseball team.
Authorities say they then tried to
sell some of the items at a used
sporting goods store in Forest.
The team got most of the equipment
back yesterday.

pick with the city of Roanoke.
The controversy stems from a new
dog park.

The city has created an off-leash
dog area in the southwest corner of
Fishburn Park.
It's about a half an acre, and is
marked with four corner posts.
Many pet owners have been
fighting for years for a place to let
their dogs roam free, but many nearby
residents have balked at the idea.

is behind bars.
Investigators arrested
58-year-old Esaw Jacob Ayers this week.
He's accused of starting numerous
daytime fires inside homes in the
Orchard Gap and the Wards Gap section
of the county.
Ayers is being held at the New
River Valley Jail without bond.

real- life lesson in the law after
allegedly starting a fight at school.

McMaster has been charged with
malicious wounding.
*CG locator Daleville The fight was last Thursday at
Lord Botetourt High School.
According to reports, McMaster
came up to another student in the
cafeteria during lunch, and punched
him.
The fight resulted in serious
injury to the victim.
McMaster turned himself into
authorities the next day.
He's due in court May 7th.

County public corruption case...as two
more former lawmen admit their roles in
the scandal.

A 42-year old state probation
officer from Fieldale pled guilty
yesterday.
Carlton Riley admitted he tried
to buy more than two pounds of cocaine.
He paid an informant for a kilo
of fake coke, led police on a
high-speed chase, and threw the stuff
out the window.
Riley faces a minimum five year
sentence, and possibly 40 years.
Former Sheriff's Deputy Steven
Preston also pled guilty yesterday, as
part of the racketeering conspiracy.
The 37-year old Bassett resident
tipped off fellow deputies and drug
dealers about a controlled delivery of
the drug Ketamine in late 2003.
Preston faces up to 20-years in
prison.

Department has new leadership.

The town council appointed Lt.
Mark Sisson as the new chief in a
closed session Tuesday night.
At age 34, Sisson is one of the
youngest people to ever hold the title
of police chief in the town.
Sisson has been with the
department for 13 years, and most
recently supervised investigations.
Sisson is married and has three
children.
He is also a 1990 graduate of
Shawsville High School and a former
marine.
He will be officially sworn in
later this week.
