Some surprising new recommendations
today from the American College of

Physicians.

They released new mammogram

(END SOT) A mammogram is gererally considered to

be one of the best ways to catch

breast cancer early. But Dr. Douglas
Owens, a Stanford Medical professor

says some women don't need them.

(Dr. Douglas Owens / American College
of Physicians)

"the risk of breast cancer varies quite
substantially in 40 to 49 age

group."

Specifically Dr. Owens along with the
American College of Physicians say

that women between the ages of 40 and
49 shouldn't all get mammograms.

After a review of 117 breast cancer
studies ... they say that women in

their 40's risk getting a false
positive ... and suffering from undue

anxiety.

(Dr. Douglas Owens / American College
of Physicians)

"Our recommendation is decisions about
screening mammograms take place

as a conversation between a woman and
her clinician."

(nats: tech)

"Hold your breath, don't breathe."

Elissa Beerman got her first mammogram

at the age of 23. At 32 her

vigilance paid off when she found a
lump.

(Elissa Beerman / Breast Cancer
Survivor)

"On a personal level I'm outraged."

(Mallika standup)

"These new recommendations don't just
worry patients like Elissa. Other

doctors say the research may be sending
the wrong message."

(Dr. Kristin Byrne / Chief of Breast
Imaging, Lenox Hill Hospital)

"We see a lot of women in their 30s and
40s getting breast cancer."

(grfx)

In fact, according to the American
Cancer Society, 25-percent of all

cases are Women Under 50.

Dr. Kristin Byrne thinks every woman
over 40 should have a yearly

screening, and in some cases, starting
at 35.

(Dr. Kristin Byrne / Chief of Breast
Imaging, Lenox Hill Hospital)

"The reasons we're detecting it early
and curing it early is because of

early detection."

Both sides agree, all women should talk
to their doctors, and be

involved in making the decision about
mammograms.
