File Tape You may remember the General
Assembly passed Delegate Morgan
Griffith's bill prohibiting smoking in
restaurants UNLESS the owner posts a
sign saying it's allowed....

Governor Kaine then amended it to
ban smoking period.

Many folks in the hospitality
industry are fuming.....

That's because Virginia defines a
restaurant as any place where food is
prepared or served.... that's your
local hot- dog stand to banquet halls
and hotels.

Still supporters say critics are
reaching for excuses.

Bell believes the amendment is
necessary to protect restaurant
workers- forced to breath tobacco

Officials with the Virginia

believe the market is already taking
care of the issue-- with many
restaurants voluntarily going smoke-
free.

Lawmakers return to Richmond
Wednesday to vote on the governor's
