ban smoking in Virginia restaurants is
heating up.

Assembly passed Delegate Morgan
Griffith's bill prohibiting smoking in
restaurants UNLESS the owner posts a
sign saying it's allowed....
Governor Kaine then amended it to
ban smoking period.
Many folks in the hospitality
industry are fuming.....
That's because Virginia defines a
restaurant as any place where food is
prepared or served.... that's your
local hot- dog stand to banquet halls
and hotels.
Still supporters say critics are
reaching for excuses.

necessary to protect restaurant
workers- forced to breath tobacco
smoke.
Officials with the Virginia
Hospitality and Travel Association
believe the market is already taking
care of the issue-- with many
restaurants voluntarily going smoke-
free.
Lawmakers return to Richmond
Wednesday to vote on the governor's
amendments.

re-opens this morning, after a bomb
threat closed it down yesterday.

An engineering dean received a
hand-written note in his mailbox around
1:30.
It said a bomb would to go off
Monday night in Torgersen Hall.
Police evacuated the building and
swept it, using bomb sniffing dogs, but
did not find anything.

Authorities are reporting an
accident on Interstate 5- 81, just
north of Orange Avenue in Roanoke.
One vehicle has overturned,
blocking two northbound lanes.
Drivers should expect delays.

aren't welcome in their neighborhood--
and city officials aren't doing enough
to get rid of them.

Old Graves Mill Road say coyotes were
killing their pets and other small
animals.
The city set up tree stands and
monitored the dens, but didn't see a

extend all the way to Charlottesville.

Blacksburg Police are
investigating a possible Wahoo
fraternity prank.
A fiberglass statue of a Hokie
Bird was stolen over the weekend of
March 24th.
According to an e- mail
circulating the Blacksburg Partnership,
8 pledges of a U- V- A fraternity have
admitted to the crime, and have even
offered to pay for the bird.
But that may not keep the
fraternity brothers out of trouble.
Blacksburg Police still plan to
file criminal charges.
Investigators say stealing the
bird is a felony.

Detention Center died last night.
Authorities say 25-year-old Derek
Jermaine Gunn was found unresponsive in
his cell at around eight fourty five.
He was taken to the hospital
where he later died.
Police are investigating the
cause.

police arrested a man who allegedly
stole money from a food market's
register.
At around ten thirty, an officer
spotted Fred Warren Stallings, Junior
running down West Main Street near the
Joy Food Store as clerks chased after
him
Stallings is being charged with
grand larceny.

region are being called to active duty.
Virginia's Army National Guard has
given orders to more than 300 soldiers-
to support Operation Iraqi Freedom.

have gone out from the Roanoke Armory..
it'll happen again May 11th when the
soldiers deploy for 13 months.
That includes 108 soldiers from

as well as 64 soldiers from Company
A based in South Boston
The call- up also includes 149
soldiers from the Headquarters, and
Headquarters Company of the 116th
infantry Brigade combat Team based in
