After a two-hour TIRADE...Iranian

said the words anxious people of
Britain were desperate to hear.

NATPOP - AHMADINEJAD (VOICE OF

THE PARDON OF THE 15 BRITONS IS A GIFT
FROM THE IRANIAN PEOPLE.

He said the 15 captured sailors and
marines would be freed immediately

and handed over to the British embassy

in Tehran RIGHT after the press

conference.

Before the announcement he SLAMMED the
British government for 'not being

brave enough' to admit its forces had
crossed into Iranian waters...and

decorated the officers in charge of the
capture nearly two weeks ago.

VIDEO FROM APTN

Reaction from Downing Street was
cautiouscalling it 'encouraging news,'

but officials wanted to know exactly
HOW and WHEN the troops would be

headed home.

ON CAMERA BRIDGE -- WESTMINSTER

EVEN BEFORE THE IRANIAN PRESIDENT
DROPPED HIS BOMBSHELL, THERE WERE

INDICATIONS THAT DIPLOMATIC PROGRESS
WAS BEING MADE TO FREE THE SAILORS

AND MARINES -- AND HINTS THAT DEALS
WERE BEING BROKERED BEHIND CLOSED

DOORS.

VIDEO FROM APTN

An Iranian diplomat seized in IRAQ two
months ago was released on

Tuesday...and Iran indicated that its
envoy would be allowed to meet

five Iranians detained by US forces in
northern Iraq.

VIDEO FROM IRANIAN TV.

But Iraqi and American official in Iraq
say there's no connection with

the case of the British troops.

As for Britain -- no official apology
ever came, and ultimately Iran

DROPPED its demand for one.

As the Iranian President himself put
it...a gift is not something you

give and expect anything in return.
