conditions in the New River Vally and
western portions of the Roanoke Valley.
That includes interstates 81 and
77, as well as primary and secondary
roads.
Motorists are urged to use
caution and allow extra time to get to
their destinations.
There have been reports of
several accidents on I-81.
The off ramp is partially closed
at mile marker 137 near Salem.
We have learned of a fatal
accident in Pulaski County early this
morning.
We will update you as soon as we
learn more information.

are without a home...and several family
pets are missing -- feared dead after a
house fire in Roanoke County last
night.

Crews received the call around
six o'clock.
When they arrived, heavy smoke
and flames were coming from this home
on Nicholas Hill Lane in the North
Lakes subdivision near Peters Creek and
Cove Roads.
Brisk winds helped fan the
flames.
It took crews about forty minutes
to get it under control.
The homes on each side suffered
minor damage too.
The home is considered a total
loss, but so far, no damage estimates
are available.
Fire investigators are still
investigating the cause.

Lake say they have done everything they
are equipped to do.
Yesterday, they scaled back their
search for 44- year- old David
Reynolds.

when a boat overturned and sank near
Smith Mountain Lake State Park.
Boats returned to the area

leads into the homicide of a local
minister.

An autospy shows 60-year-old
Nancy Copin died from blunt force
trauma.
It happened in the Snow Creek
area of Franklin County.
Investigators have been at her
home for two days gathering evidence.
They first learned there was a
problem Thursday morning.
That's when three members of her
congregation at Snow Creek Christian
Church went to check on her after she
didn't show up for midweek service.

started with the Roanoke Times.

The story angered some gun owners

Tens of thousands were still
without power Friday after Wednesday
night's spring storm dumped about 15
inches of snow in parts of Maine.

hundreds of thousands after the wet
snow turned into ice and cold winds
snapped branches and trees.
About 39 thousand homes and
businesses were still without power

The Cleveland Indians tried to
play ball, but Mother Nature kept
getting in the way. Friday's season
home opener got snowed out, with *one

After numerous delays to cover

Major League Baseball officials decided
to call it a night.
Field crews even tried using leaf
blowers to clear the field, but the
snow was coming too fast to make a
difference.

GRAPHIC=NONE VDOT is reporting slippery road
conditions in the New River Vally and
western portions of the Roanoke Valley.
That includes interstates 81 and
77, as well as primary and secondary
roads.
Motorists are urged to use
caution and allow extra time to get to
their destinations.
There have been reports of
several accidents on I-81.
The accident we reported earlier
in Salem is now clear.
But there is a tractor-trailer
accident on Route 220 in Henry County.
The on-ramp to route 220 bypass
north is closed in Ridgeway.
We have learned of a fatal
accident in Pulaski County early this
morning.
We will update you as soon as we
learn more information.

how an eight month old baby got drugs
into his system.

grandmother 48 year-old Janna Beau at
the time. When his mother came to pick
him up four hours later she noticed he
was looking into space and
unresponsive, so she rushed him to the
hospital..
A drug test revealed he had
methamphetamines, nicotine and caffeine
in his system.
Police have not arrested anyone yet.
But they DON'T believe this was an
accident.

bled -- as part of his role in a
re-enactment of the Crucifixion of
Jesus Christ.

people turned out to watch as he was
also hung from a large cross square
during the performance in Mexico City.
22 year old Emmanuel Guillen beat out
nearly two hundred actors for the part.
His aunt fought back tears during the

all his life to play this role. Local
residents believe this interpretation
of the Passion of Christ began in the
19th century.

are without a home...and several family
pets are missing -- feared dead after a
house fire in Roanoke County last
night.

Crews received the call around
six o'clock.
When they arrived, heavy smoke
and flames were coming from this home
on Nicholas Hill Lane in the North
Lakes subdivision near Peters Creek and
Cove Roads.
Brisk winds helped fan the
flames.
It took crews about forty minutes
to get it under control.
The homes on each side suffered
minor damage too.
The home is considered a total
loss, but so far, no damage estimates
are available.
Fire investigators have not ruled
on a cause.

fatal house fire in Giles County.

Family members tried in vain to
rescue Rowena Burton from her home
Thursday night.
The 70-year-old woman was on an
oxygen tank and investigators believe
that may have fueled the flames.
Two other family members were
taken to the hospital; one with burns
and one with smoke inhalation.
The home was a total loss.
The sheriff's office is still
investigating, but deputies believe the
fire was accidental.

Vonage's lawyers say the compromise
injunction from the federal judge is

new jobs.

closer to reality yesterday.
The controversial plan got
approval from the Federal Highway
Administration. That means V-DOT can
begin design work on the highway that
will eventually link Roanoke with North
Carolina.
Estimates for design and
construction top four-BILLION dollars.
Currently, only some 13-million is
allocated for I-73 in V-DOT's six-year
improvement plan.

Highland County.

:05 recommended the S-C-C approve the wind
farm....
But commissioners want to hear
how the impact on birds and bats will
be monitored... AND... how the company
plans to keep large numbers of the
flying mammals from getting killed.
Other states with wind farms
adjust their hours of operation during
migratory seasons.
The hearing is set for July 17th
and will be webcast on the S-C-C's
website.

Town council voted to sell Hogan
Dam to a local developer.
The 400-thousand dollar deal
includes 17-hundred wooded acres and a
41-acre lake.
The dam is in danger of failing,
and the state wanted the town to pay
the 800-thousand dollars it would take
to fix it.
The deal allows Thornspring Group
to assume responsibility for the
structure. It will build homes on the
property.
