These Iraqis are marking the day when
American forces rolled into
Baghdad.. by demanding U-S troops go
home.
Summoned by the powerful cleric Muqtada
al-Sadr.. thousands of Shiites
flocked to the holy city of Najaf.. for
a massive demonstration.
(FILE April 9, 2003)
Four years ago today.. Saddam Husseins
statue came down.. symbolizing
the end of his rule. Rejoicing in the
streets quickly gave way to a
violent insurgency.. now complicated by
relentless sectarian fighting
between Sunnis and Shiites.
Earlier this year President Bush
ordered in more U-S troops to help
quell the violence.
Waving Iraqi flags on the streets of
Najaf today.. these protesters
chanted for the Americans to leave.
Al-Sadr himself was not at the
demonstration- hes been keeping low
profile since the security crackdown
began eight weeks ago. U-S
officials believe he fled to Iran.
Regardless of the his whereabouts..
al-Sadr issued a statement ordering his
Mahdi Army militiamen to
redouble their battle to drive out
American forces.. and encouraging the
Iraqi military and police to join them.
Over the weekend U-S backed troops
clashed with al-Sadrs militiamen
south of Baghdad. Car bombs and other
attacks in and around the capital
city left dozens of Iraqis dead.. at
least 10 U-S soldiers were killed.
In an effort to curb violence today..
Iraqs military declared a 24-ban
on all cars in Baghdad.
CLOSE: President Bush and Congress are
still locked in a stalemate over
the Iraq war.. one powerful Democratic
Senator has asserted Democrats
will keep pressing the president but
will not cut funding troops. Tracie

ten pounds each.
Nearly 80 percent of African American
women are overweight.. and more than

Researchers at the Vanderbilt
University say treating cancer with
surgery, chemotherapy or radiation may
sometimes cause tumors to spread.
The team believes a compound called
T-G-F Beta is part of the problem.
They are testing whether T-G-F beta
induced by anti-cancer therapies
actually helps tumor cells survive.
The scientists theorize that developing
drugs to block the compound may prevent
cancer from recurring.
(wipevo)
If you want to kick the habit.. eating
healthy may help.
Researchers at Duke University found
fruits, vegetables, and dairy foods
make cigarettes taste terrible.
On the flip side meat, coffee, and
alcoholic beverages make smoking much
tastier.
The study s author plans more research
to understand why.. but in the
meantime, for those trying to quit,
more fruits and veggies can t hurt.
Those are some of the day s top health

A challenge has gone out to millions of
African-Americans to adopt a healthier
lifestyle.
(vo)
The goal is to lose weight -- a lot of
weight.
Organizers call it the 50 million pound
challenge.. and they are urging
five-million African Americans to lose
ten pounds each.
Nearly 80 percent of African American
women are overweight.. and more than
half are obese.. contributing to
skyrocketing rates of high blood
pressure, stroke and diabetes.

Researchers at the Vanderbilt
University say treating cancer with
surgery, chemotherapy or radiation may
sometimes cause tumors to spread.
The team believes a compound called
T-G-F Beta is part of the problem.
They are testing whether T-G-F beta
induced by anti-cancer therapies
actually helps tumor cells survive.
The scientists theorize that developing
drugs to block the compound may prevent
cancer from recurring.
(wipevo)
If you want to kick the habit.. eating
healthy may help.
Researchers at Duke University found
fruits, vegetables, and dairy foods
make cigarettes taste terrible.
On the flip side meat, coffee, and
alcoholic beverages make smoking much
tastier.
The study s author plans more research
to understand why.. but in the
meantime, for those trying to quit,
more fruits and veggies can t hurt.
Those are some of the day s top health
stories.

These Iraqis are marking the day when
American forces rolled into
Baghdad.. by demanding U-S troops go
home.
Summoned by the powerful cleric Muqtada
al-Sadr.. thousands of Shiites
flocked to the holy city of Najaf.. for
a massive demonstration.
(FILE April 9, 2003)
Four years ago today.. Saddam Husseins
statue came down.. symbolizing
the end of his rule. Rejoicing in the
streets quickly gave way to a
violent insurgency.. now complicated by
relentless sectarian fighting
between Sunnis and Shiites.
Earlier this year President Bush
ordered in more U-S troops to help
quell the violence.
Waving Iraqi flags on the streets of
Najaf today.. these protesters
chanted for the Americans to leave.
Al-Sadr himself was not at the
demonstration- hes been keeping low
profile since the security crackdown
began eight weeks ago. U-S
officials believe he fled to Iran.
Regardless of the his whereabouts..
al-Sadr issued a statement ordering his
Mahdi Army militiamen to
redouble their battle to drive out
American forces.. and encouraging the
Iraqi military and police to join them.
Over the weekend U-S backed troops
clashed with al-Sadrs militiamen
south of Baghdad. Car bombs and other
attacks in and around the capital
city left dozens of Iraqis dead.. at
least 10 U-S soldiers were killed.
In an effort to curb violence today..
Iraqs military declared a 24-ban
on all cars in Baghdad.
CLOSE: President Bush and Congress are
still locked in a stalemate over
the Iraq war.. one powerful Democratic
Senator has asserted Democrats
will keep pressing the president but
will not cut funding troops. Tracie

(END SOT) death of an Amherst County woman and
the slow response time of rescue crews

Some of them were EMS workers like
Tonie Lugar who wrote:
...we need paid EMS in all parts of
Virginia and I think it would save a
lot of lives! Yes, we need more
volunteers, but I seriously don't think
that will help the problem of slow
response time.
And a viewer from Buena Vista echoed
that call, saying:
...if training or lack of help is an
issue in some of these areas, the state
and local governments need to step up
NOW and look in to resolving these
issues. As a nurse, I learned a long
time ago the true meaning of EMS. It is
more than "Emergency Medical Service" .
To me, it means "Every Man Saves."
A viewer from Lynchburg let us know the
coyote problem in her neighborhood is
real and frustrating, even though
animal control hasn't been able to
eliminate any of the animals:
During the past year, my neighbors have
found coyotes lying on their back
porch, around their vehicles and RV and
one night their son was afraid to get
out of his car because several coyotes
were in their driveway when he came in
from work.
