Troopers say 38-year-old

the side of the road and hit a tree.

in Memphis has left four people dead-
three of them children.

morning.
Authorities say eight other people
were taken to area hospitals.
Their injuries are not believed to be
critical.
There are reports of residents hanging
out of windows to escape the smoke, and
jumping from balconies to escape the
flames.
So far, there's no word on how the
fire started.

GRAPHIC=Cold Weather A cold snap is causing damage to more
than just spring flowers.
Some growers in the Roanoke area say
most of
their peach, plum, cherry and nectarine
crops have frozen on recent nights.
Growers in the Shenandoah Valley and
other northern counties, meanwhile, say
there doesn't appear to be too much
damage to THEIR peach crops.
But any widespread damage to the
crops could mean a chill for consumers
at the checkout line.

was to hire a helicopter to keep
pushing warm air down on his crop, a
luxury that not all farmers could
afford.
(VO) So from Cleveland to Charlston ...
farmers hit the fields Monday to try
and survey damage done by the artic
blast.

"This one had the flowers already on
there like it was going to produce
grapes, but of course it's not going to
survive at all."
(VO) Bryan Siddle isn't alone, 80 to 90
percent of the vineyards in Missouri
are feared to have frozen.
(SOT/Siddle) "I mean, what can you say?
There's not much you can do. Mother
Nature is the beast of it all, and I
can't do anything about this."
(VO) The prognosis for peaches isn't
much better.

"This is probably one of the most
widespread damages that I've seen."
(VO) Officials in Georgia and Alabama
said up to half the peaches may have
spoiled ... despite desperate weekend
attempts to fight the freeze.
(SOT/Boozer) "Across north Alabama with
apples and peaches, I'm hearing severe
damage to those crops."
(vo) In North Carolina, this farmer
didn't like what he saw as he dissected
the situation.
(SOT) "You can see how brown that is."

still be a few weeks till all the
damage can be assessed but the big
reason why this cold snap wreaked so
much havoc in the South is the early
spring-like temperatures in march,
which made so many plants think it was
spring, blossom and leave them
vulnerable to the cold. Hari

injured this moring in the Bonsack area
of Botetourt County.
Witnesses say a car ran a stop sign
at Rome and Crumpacher and ran into a
field.
The car flipped twice.
Officers say the female driver of the
car was taken to Roanoke Memorial where
her condition has not been released.
Her male passenger was pronounced dead
at the scene. Their names have not been
released.

Commission has given its okay to
Roanoke Gas Company to a reduced rate
increase for operating expenses.
The final order means customers
will be receiving refunds with

paying higher rates since October of

Four seal pups arrived from the Marine
Mammal Center in Sausalito, and will
stay at the San Francisco Zoo for three
to four weeks.
During that time, they'll be fed
lots of herring in order to gain weight
before they are released into the wild.
The San Francisco Zoo and the Marine
Mammal Center work hand in hand to help
malnourished elephant seals.
As the zoo fattens up the pups, the
Mammal Center frees up room to treat
more critical patients.

Eddie Robinson will be remembered today
at a wake at the school where he
coached for 57 years.

those who know him, realize he's up
against a fight, and it's not from
across the net.
Board, a Rocky Mount native, has
MPG, a type of kidney disease that will
require a transplant. It has forced
him to forgo singles matches, playing
doubles only this season to combat
fatigue. Various family members and
even his coach, Gary Holden have
undergone the testing process to see if
they are matches for donating a kidney,
but so far none have been compatible.
