Insurgents made a direct hit on a
bridge in Baghdad this morning. A

suicide truck bomb ripped through the
steel structure sending cars into

the Tigris River.

Police boats searched the water for
victims.. at least 10 people were

killed and more than two dozen injured.

Two months into the U-S security
crackdown.. and violence continues to

plaque the Iraqi capital. Secretary of
Defense Robert Gates broke the

news Wednesday that tens of thousands
of troops in Iraq now will now

have to stay longer than their usual
year-long tour.

(GFX)

The Pentagons new 15-month tour

applies to all active duty army units

in Iraq, Kuwait and Afghanistan. Thats
about 100,000 soldiers there now

plus another 100,000 who will
eventually replace them. It's the only
way

the army can guarantee troops a full 12
months at home before being sent

back again.

(GFX-OUT)

Gates said it also would allow the
Pentagon to maintain its troop surge

in Iraq until this time next year.

(Robert Gates, Secretary of Defense)

GATES 15:13:52 We are creating the
capability to keep it in place.

Whether it will be kept in place
depends entirely on the conditions on

the ground.

Congressional Democrats who oppose the
administrations troop build-up

and have passed a war funding bill that
sets a timetable for withdrawal

from Iraq.. called the tour extensions
further evidence that the

Presidents war policy is failing.

CLOSE: Democrats have now accepted the
Presidents invitation to go the

White House and talk about the war
funding bill, but maintain that it

must be a two-way discussion. Tracie

When officers are properly

Author and journalist Pete Earley

this issue.

He has first-hand knowledge of
how the system works... or as he says,

to get the treatment necessary to help

The situation is even more

*CG standup Bob Grebe
bgrebe@wdbj7.com Kimberly, journalist and author
Pete Earley lives in Virginia and has a
son who is bi-polar.

In his book, "Crazy: A father's
search through America's Mental Health
Madness," Earley describes how his son
broke into a neighbor's house in the
throes of a manic episode.

Through that experience he
learned first-hand what happens to
mentally ill people who end up in a
legal system that is ill-equiped to
handle them.

ENG#=1 VO NAT

VO NAT Earley was in Salem and Roanoke
this week to speak at the annual
meeting of the National Alliance on
Mental Illness and at a presentation
for Mental Health America of Roanoke
Valley.

His investigation uncovered the

lack of medical treatment available to
mentally ill people who break the law.

Early says they are often locked
away in jail because there is nowhere
else to put them.

He also said he was proud to be
in Roanoke where law enforcement
receives crisis intervention training.

It's a program that was formed in
1999 with the assistance of local

Through the program, specially
trained officers deal with situations
involving someone who is known to have
