(END SOT) In 1953, a 20-year old radio announcer

from Galax named Herm Reavis came to
Roanoke to work at WRIS.

Back then, the station was located
downtown, right above the Thornton-
Creasy drug store.

Radio programming was very different in
those days. A station might play "Clair
de Lune" one hour, and "Blue Moon Of
Kentucky" the next.

VOICE OF HERM REAVIS/HALL OF FAME
BROADCASTER: STATIONS TRIED TO BE ALL
THINGS TO ALL PEOPLE.

In the afternoons, Reavis played music
aimed at teenagers. And he had a hunch
about what they'd like. He and some
friends had been hearing some new
sounds by musicians such as Fats Domino
on the airwaves coming up from a
powerful station in the deep south.

HERM REAVIS: A STATION IN NEW ORLEANS,
WWL, I BELIEVE. IT HAD A PROGRAM CALLED
"GENE'S RECORD SHOP." AND GENE PLAYED
ALL KINDS OF RHYTHM AND BLUES MUSIC,
BOOGIE WOOGIE TYPE MUSIC. AND I
HAPPENED TO LUCK INTO FINDING A STACK
OF THOSE RECORDS AT THE RADIO STATION
THAT WERE JUST STACKED BACK. NOBODY WAS
PLAYING THEM, AND I JUST STARTED
PLAYING THEM ONE AFTERNOON.

Reavis had just given Roanoke a taste
of the music that New York deejay Alan

Freed would soon be calling "rock 'n'
roll." The response was dramatic.

HERM REAVIS: I REMEMBER ONE DAY WITHIN
THE FIRST COUPLE OF WEEKS, THE
SECRETARY CAME IN AND SAID "THE
MAILMAN'S HERE; YOU'VE GOT A BIG STACK
OF MAIL." HE WAS ACTUALLY CARRYING, OR
DRAGGING, TWO BIG MAIL BAGS OF MAIL.
THE STATION ACTUALLY DIDN'T KNOW, OR
THE MANAGEMENT DIDN'T KNOW THIS PROGRAM
WAS EVEN ON THE AIR.

WRIS capitalized on Reavis's popularity
by forming the "Squirm With Herm Club."
Cardholders got special deals from
local merchants.

But Roanoke's first rock and roll
deejay was soon in the middle of
Roanoke's first rock and roll
controversy.

HERM REAVIS: THERE WAS A SONG CALLED
"HONEY LOVE," DONE BY THE DRIFTERS.

THE DRIFTERS SINGING: I NEED IT, WHEN
THE MOON IS BRIGHT. I NEED IT, WHEN YOU
HOLD ME TIGHT.

HERM REAVIS: RIGHT AWAY, THE LISTENERS
LIKED IT. FOR THE MOST PART. BUT SOME
DID NOT, AND WERE OFFENDED BY IT. SO,
IT GOT TO BE A CONTROVERSIAL RECORD.

THE DRIFTERS SINGING: I LOVE IT, 'CAUSE

IT FEELS SO FINE. I LOVE IT, YES IT
THRILLS MY SPINE.

HERM REAVIS: SO I HAD AN OLD RECORD, IT
WAS NOT "HONEY LOVE" BY THE DRIFTERS
BUT IT WAS JUST SOME OLD RECORD,
THROWAWAY TYPE. SO I WAS SAYING "IF YOU
DON'T WANT TO HEAR IT, IF IT'S NOT TO
BE PLAYED, I'LL JUST BREAK IT. I JUST
WON'T PLAY IT ANYMORE! THEN I BROKE IT.
AND YOU COULD HEAR IT SNAP OVER THE
MICROPHONE. I GOT SO INVOLVED I EVEN
MADE A LITTLE CUT ON MY FINGER.

THE DRIFTERS SINGING: GET IT, BOY!
HONEY LOVE.

HERM REAVIS: THEN I STARTED THIS NICE,
SOFT, SWEET MUSIC. AND I PLAYED ABOUT
THREE OR FOUR SONGS OFF OF THAT LP. AND
THEN I CAME BACK IN AND I SAID "HEY,
GUESS WHAT? SOMEBODY JUST BROUGHT ME
ANOTHER COPY OF 'HONEY LOVE.' I'M GONNA
PLAY THIS THING REGARDLESS OF WHAT THEY
THINK!" AND I PLAYED IT. THEN I PLAYED
IT ABOUT THREE OR FOUR TIMES IN A ROW!

Reavis soon had competition from the
late "Jivin Jackson" on WROV, and rock
and roll has been on the air in Roanoke
ever since.

Reavis moved into management, and today
runs country station WSLC.

During his 50 years in radio, he's
helped many successful broadcasters get
started in the business. But you can
bet none of his protgs ever received
two sacks of fan mail in one day.

(END SOT) Ed Wang has a been through

blocking drills before at Virginia
Tech. The only difference this Spring
is that Wang has a new number and is
moving inside from Tight End to
Offensive Tackle.

(WANG BITE:)

Wang has traded in his number 85
for 77 and is dealing with the changes
of sliding one spot closer to the
Center.

(WANG BITE:)

The Hokie Coaching Staff is
hoping that Wang can follow in the
footsteps of another Player who made
transition. Duane Brown came to
Blacksburg as a Tight End, the
2-thousand and 7 Season will be his 3rd
straight as a starting Tackle.

(BEAMER BITE:)

(WANG BITE:)

Wang could be sliding into
Brown's old position at Right Tackle,
Brown has moved to the left Side for
his Senior Season. In Blacksburg Grant
