What started out as a typical Monday
in Southwest Virginia quickly became a
day no one in our region will ever
forget.

What federal authorities believe was
a lone gunman went on a shooting
rampage this morning inside two
buildings Virginia Tech.

out. Then

I knew this was serious. I didn't hear
anything about the shooting that

happened in a.J. But when I saw the
guns, I thought there was a bomb
threat. I

thought hear something gunshots far
away. It seemed to me -- where the cops
are

near right now. And then all the cops
were trying to get into Norris hall and

they used like a bomb or something to
open one of the doors. Probably they

dropped a bomb in the building. There
was a person on the second floor of

Norris trying to tell the cops that
he's in there. And probably trying to
guide

him in.

Charles Whitman killed 16 people from
the observation deck of a clock tower.
Using a high powered rifle he was able
to shoot at students for more than 90
minutes before officers killed him.

two teen-agers killed 12 fellow
students and a teacher seven years ago
before taking their own lives.

Eighteen year old Eric Harris and
17-year old Dylan Kelbold dressed
themselves in al black before going on
the shooting spree on April 20, 1999
almost exactly seven years ago.

getting victims to area hospitals
quicker, but local med-flight choppers

were grounded due to the high winds.

Winds throughout central and
southwest Virginia were gusting at more
50 miles an hour throughout the day.

Lynchburg ... say helicopters cannot
fly in turbulent conditions like those
that existed today.

Wind gusts make it especially
