For the most part, it's just a
nuisance, but there are scattered
reports throughout the region of trees
and power lines down.

The full extent is likely to become
more apparent once the sun is up.

While we are hearing many reports of
downed lines, Appalachian Power says
there are no widespread power outages.

The rain keeps falling.. and the water
keeps rising.

The Noreaster churning along the
eastern seaboard has already turned

streets into rivers..

(NAT- 22:36:20 nat of pump)

..and hundreds of basements into ponds.

As the storm worked its way to the east
coast it left a trail of

destruction including a tornado in
South Carolina that killed one person.

Costal flood watches are in effect from
Maryland to Maine.. with

emergency crews anticipating some of
the worst flooding in more than a

decade.

(Liz Ulialo, Sea Bright, NJ Resident)

SOT It's definitely what they hyped it

to be. It's pretty impressive..

these waves and this wind.

East of New York City.. Long Island
residents braced for the brunt of

the storm.

(Rich Cutler, Long Island Resident)

SOT: we've got sump pumps going, bags

packed, you never know what's

going to happen but you've got to be
prepared.

Air travelers trying to get in and out
of New York havent been going

anywhere.. some 500 flights were
cancelled Sunday.. more cancellations

and delays are expected today.

(Pauline Chiou, Reporting)

BRIDGE: The rain is still falling here
in Times Square.. Sunday was the

second wettest day ever logged in
Central Park.. the National Weather

Service measured seven and a half
inches of rain.

Boston Marathon runners are in for a
soggy race today. The city is

expecting up to five inches of rain and
wind gusts up to 25 miles per

hour.

SOT I'm not worried about the rain.

Rain is rain, I run in rain all the

time. When you train you run so, its
there you can't do anything about

it

And for areas further inland this storm
has meant spring snow. It dusted

new grills sitting out in upstate New

The clock is ticking on the tax
deadline.

For those who did not wait until
the last minute, now's a good time to
be thinking about next year's filing.

Bob Grebe has more in today's
Consumer Watch 7 Report.

LIVE=BOB AT BAM LIVE FULL

*CG standup Bob Grebe
bgrebe@wdbj7.com Kimberly, April is known for rain

showers, taxes, and the start of the
Spring home-buying season.

Most stories over the next two
days will be about the tax-man who's
come a-callin' once again.

But this Consumer Watch is about
what folks can do, now, to better
prepare themselves for the 2007 tax
season.

ENG#=1 VO NAT

VO NAT For those who itemize, usually a
big chunk of their deductions come from
interest payments on their home
mortgage and property taxes.

For those who rent, often the
standard deduction is the only way to
go.

Anyone thinking about buying a
home in 2007 needs to think about the
timing of the purchase.

The earlier one buys a home, the
more interest one will pay.

That could go a long way in
determining if itemized-deductions are
an option.

There's nothing new about that.

What is new is that PMI will be
deductible on 2007 returns.

That will make a big impact on

the number of people who will now be
able to itemize next year.

ENG#=2 SOT FULL
SOT FULL

INQ= Certainly

*CG 2line David Kembel
Tax Professional 02.43 "Certainly if you were to buy a
home in the second half of the year
there's a chance there wouldn't be
enough interest there to itemize. It's
hard to plan buying a home around your
income taxes, but all things being
said, if you have a choice of closing
in November or December or waiting
until January, it might be worth it
tax-wise to wait until January." 03.06
(:23)

RUNS= 23 (SOT FULL)

OQ=wait until January. (2nd time)

VO NAT VO NAT

The addition of PMI to the list
of deductions is a big deal.

In years past, many people used
80-20 mortgages to be able to write-off
all the interest.

Now, in many cases, a standard
mortgage with PMI may end up saving

home-owners money in the long run.

LIVE=BOB FULL LIVE FULL

Another consideration for those
who have to refinance in 2007 is how
many points to pay on the new loan.

The discount points reduce the
interest rate and are deductible over
the term of the mortgage.

TOSS ACROSS TOSS ACROSS

And for people buying a new home
in 2007, the points they buy can be
deducted for that tax year... providing
they have enough itemize.

The Noreaster churning along the
eastern seaboard has already turned

streets into rivers..

..and hundreds of basements into ponds.

As the storm worked its way to the east
coast it left a trail of

destruction including a tornado in
South Carolina that killed one person.

Costal flood watches are in effect from

Maryland to Maine.. with

emergency crews anticipating some of
the worst flooding in more than a

decade.

(Liz Ulialo, Sea Bright, NJ Resident)

SOT It's definitely what they hyped it

to be. It's pretty impressive..

these waves and this wind.

the storm.

SOT: we've got sump pumps going, bags

going to happen but you've got to be

Air travelers trying to get in and out

and delays are expected today.

(Pauline Chiou, Reporting)

BRIDGE: The rain is still falling here
in Times Square.. Sunday was the

second wettest day ever logged in
Central Park.. the National Weather

Service measured seven and a half
inches of rain.

Boston Marathon runners are in for a
soggy race today. The city is

expecting up to five inches of rain and
wind gusts up to 25 miles per

SOT I'm not worried about the rain.

CONSUMER WATCH ANIMATION Consumer Watch Animation

The clock is ticking on the tax
deadline.

For those who did not wait until
the last minute, now's a good time to
be thinking about next year's filing.

Bob Grebe has more in today's
Consumer Watch 7 Report.

LIVE=BOB AT BAM LIVE FULL

*CG standup Bob Grebe
bgrebe@wdbj7.com Kimberly, April is known for rain
showers, taxes, and the start of the
Spring home-buying season.

Most stories over the next two
days will be about the tax-man who's
come a-callin' once again.

But this Consumer Watch is about
what folks can do now to better prepare
themselves for the 2007 tax season.

ENG#=1 VO NAT

VO NAT For those who itemize, usually a
big chunk of their deductions come from
interest payments on their home
mortgage and property taxes.

For those who rent, often the
standard deduction is the only way to
go.

Anyone thinking about buying a
home in 2007 needs to think about the
timing of the purchase.

The earlier one buys a home, the
more interest one will pay.

That could go a long way in
determining if itemized-deductions are
an option.

There's nothing new about that.

What is new is that PMI will be
deductible on 2007 returns.

That will make a big impact on
the number of people who will now be
able to itemize next year.

ENG#=2 SOT FULL
SOT FULL

INQ= Certainly

*CG 2line David Kembel
Tax Professional 02.43 "Certainly if you were to buy a
home in the second half of the year
there's a chance there wouldn't be
enough interest there to itemize. It's
hard to plan buying a home around your
income taxes, but all things being
said, if you have a choice of closing

in November or December or waiting
until January, it might be worth it
tax-wise to wait until January." 03.06
(:23)

RUNS= 23 (SOT FULL)

OQ= until January

VO NAT VO NAT

The addition of PMI to the list
of deductions is a big deal.

In years past, many people used
80-20 mortgages to be able to write-off
all the interest.

Now, in many cases, a standard
mortgage with PMI may end up saving
home-owners money in the long run.

LIVE=BOB FULL LIVE FULL

Another consideration for those
who have to refinance in 2007 is how
many points to pay on the new loan.

The discount points reduce the
interest rate and are deductible over
the term of the mortgage.
TOSS ACROSS TOSS ACROSS

And for people buying a new home
in 2007, the points they buy can be
deducted for that tax year... providing
they have enough itemize.
