ACROSS THE COUNTRY COLLEGES AND
UNIVERSITIES ARE SUDDENLY TAKING A
CRASH COURSE ON CAMPUS SAFETY. IT COMES
AS THE SHOCK OF MONDAY'S MASSACRE AT
VIRGINIA TECH SETS IN.

(Robert Riskin/Freshman, University of
Colorado)

"It makes everyone kind of feel
vulnerable, it's like it can happen
anywhere, to anyone and it's scary to
think that."

SECURITY SYSTEMS ALREADY IN PLACE ARE
NOT FOOL PROOF.

Locator Indianapolis.

AT THIS UNIVERSITY IN INDIANAPOLIS -
STUDENTS HAVE SOMETHING LIKE A PAGER
WHICH SIGNALS AN ALARM TO A NEARBY
EMERGENCY POLE. POLICE KNOW WHO HIT THE
BUZZER AND WHERE ... BUT WON'T KNOW THE
PROBLEM UNTIL THEY SHOW UP. (30)

MANY CAMPUSES USE SECURITY KEY PADS.

Nat - you put the key in this lights up

BUT AS WAS THE CASE AT VIRGINIA TECH -
THE SYSTEM IS TURNED OFF DURING THE DAY
- AND ONLY AS SECURE AS STUDENTS USING
IT. (sign: do you know who you are
letting in the building?)

AT DENVER'S AURARIA CAMPUS OFFICIALS

SAY THEY ARE CONSTANTLY UPDATING
SECURITY ... DEVELOPING AN INSTANT
WARNING SYSTEM TO BE BROADCAST ON
SCHOOL T-VS AND POP-UP ON COMPUTERS.

BUT THE SPRAWLING DESIGN OF MANY
COLLEGE CAMPUSES MAKES IT IMPOSSIBLE TO
SECURE 100-PERCENT AND SYSTEMS THAT
HAVE MADE ELEMENTARY AND HIGH SCHOOLS
SAFER ARE NOT COMPATIBLE AT MASSIVE,
PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES (1:00)

(Joann Haldemann/Junior)

"What works for one won't work for
another."

STANDUP BRIDGE: Denver, Colorado

THERE IS REASON TO WORRY THAT A
SHOOTING SIMILAR TO VIRGINIA TECH'S
COULD HAPPEN AGAIN ... SOON. SAFETY
EXPERTS SAY COPY CATS OFTEN TAKE THEIR
SHOT WITHIN THE FIRST FEW WEEKS OF THE
ORIGINAL EVENT.

(SUPER: Ronald Stephens/Exec. Dir/ Natl
School Safety)

"The bench mark of the last tragedy
becomes the baseline for the next."

LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALS SAY IT IS
TOUGH TO PREVENT RAMDOM ATTACKS, SO
STUDENTS MUST KNOW THEIR SCHOOL'S
EMERGENCY PLAN - SHOULD THEY EVER NEED
TO USE IT. JENNIFER MILLER CBS NEWS,
