people were gunned down at Virginia
Tech.

It was the largest mass shooting
in US history and today the entire
state took time to remember the

Associated Press late today, saying the

family feels "hopeless, helpless and

bitter rivals- UVA had students wearing

support.

And, that was the case at local

Another story of heroism is
emerging from inside Norris Hall.

Waleed Shaalan was in a civil
engineering class when the gunman

opened fire.

Shaalan was hit and when the
gunman came back to look for survivors,
Shaalan distracted him and took the
second round of bullets.

One of the three survivors from
that classroom says Shaalan saved his
life.

Roanoke.

Two officers arrived at the
Ashton Hill Apartment complex
responding a call about a man
attempting suicide.

That man was 43 year-old, John
Harvey Bridges.

Bridges later died at the
hospital after being fatally shot by
police.

about his friend.

the situation?

his friend who was in a suicidal state.

However, Ragland didn't expect
that call for help to leave his
roommate dead.

Ron Ragland sat in his living
room watching as a police officer fired
a fatal shot at his roommate, 43
year-old John Harvey Bridges.

Ragland saw Bridges pull a sword
off the wall but says he never got it
out of it's sheath.

trying to harm himself.

And disagrees with the police
account that Bridges came toward them
in a threatening manner.

He says the officer was standing

in front of the bird cage but his
friend never moved from his spot.

OQ= According to police, Bridges took

out the weapon, ignored their command
to to drop it and even yelled, "Just
Kill me then."

The chief says shooting a suspect
is always their last resort.

where late last year the Sherwood
Baptist Church in Albany, helped
produce the movie, "Facing the Giants."
