<<((NAT SOUND OF LET'S GO HOKIES))

Since the tragedy at Virginia Tech,
people have been expressing their grief
in their own way.

Ben Lansing, an editorial cartoonist,
decided to produce this sketch of the
Hokie Bird being consoled by mascots
from around the state.

SOT FULL 3:43:20 SOT FULL

INQ=I've been amazed BEN LANSING/EDITORIAL CARTOONIST: I'VE

Lansing sell t-shirts with the cartoon

The proceeds would go to the Hokie

SOME BOOKSTORES. THEY SAID THEY WOULD
LOVE TO SELL THIS AS WELL. HOWEVER,
THEY NEED TO HAVE THE LICENSING
AGREEMENT FROM VIRGINIA TECH TO MAKE
THAT HAPPEN.

RUNS10 (END SOT)

OQ=MAKE THAT HAPPEN So Lansing called Virginia Tech for

permission, but the university said no.

[graphic 1]

On its website, Virginia Tech
explains at this time it has not
authorized any apparel or products for
sale.

That means everything including these
VT ribbons sold by a school in Roanoke.

[graphic 2]

The university says quote we request
that you, please, do not purchase any
unauthorized illegal memorial products

that contain the Virginia Tech
trademarks.

[end graphic 2]

[graphic 3]

In an e-mail to News 7, the
university elaborated saying that it
has been swamped with these requests
from around the U.S. The e-mail goes
on to say, unfortunately there are also
people who have crawled out from the
under the rock and trying to make a
buck off this tragedy.

[end graphic 3]

But what about the people like Ben
Lansing who truly want to help?

SOT FULL 3:48:56 SOT FULL

INQ=It's disappointing BEN LANSING: IT'S DISAPPOINTING IN A

SENSE BECAUSE I THINK THIS COULD REALLY
HELP THEIR MEMORIAL FUND AND THERE ARE
MANY PEOPLE WHO WANT TO WEAR THIS ON
THEIR T-SHIRTS BUT AT THE SAME TIME
BECAUSE THIS HAS BEEN SUCH A TRAGEDY I
WOULDN'T WANT TO DO ANYTHING THAT
WOULDN'T WANT TO DO ANYTHING THAT
WOULDN'T RESPECT THE WISHES OF THE
