of Montgomery Regional Hospital.

Matt LaPorte said their goodbyes during
services in New Jersey today.

the fact that the 20-year-old was among
those killed in Blacksburg last week.

Matthew La Porte had dreamed of being
in the military since he was in the
seventh grade.

He was third in his class at Carson
Long Military Institute and earned an
Air Force R-O-T-C scholarship to attend
Tech, where he was a drum major and
played the cello.

Ryan Clark was celebrated in
Georgia today as an example of how to
live and love.

Clark was just a few weeks
shy of his 23rd birthday and his
graduation from Tech.

During his five years as a
Hokie, Clark played the baritone horn,
served as a residence hall assistant
and earned degrees in psychology,
biology and English.

an added police presence.

Officers from the Virginia State
Police and Virginia Tech, plus deputies
from the Montgomery County Sheriff's
Office patrolled the school.

Agencies wouldn't talk about just
how many officers they had stationed
throughout the university, but say it's

The victims of Monday's shooting
included one former student, several
parents, and and a number of
volunteers.

Schools reopened with a
heightened police presence, and
additional security measures to
reassure students. Counselors were on
hand in every county school, not just
those in Blacksburg.

outlining the measures the school
system has taken... In addition,
counseling stations will be set up
tonight at four schools in Auburn,
Christiansburg, Blacksburg and
Shawsville.

been asking whether the school year
will be extended. That is still under
review, but officials are hoping unused
snow days will make up the difference,
and we're told graduation will occur as

doesn't think Cho should have ever been

pass Kendra's Law this winter... one
that requires monitoring for mental
out- patients.

handle on two sizeable forest fires
burning in Western Virginia.

have burned on Potts Mountain near
Route 311 in Craig County.

Crews from the U-S Forest
Service hope to have the fire contained

this evening.

The Potts Mountain Rifle
Range is closed.

The Forest Service says no
structures are threatened but smoke
could reduce visibility for drivers on
Route 311.

County should be contained tonight.

That fire has burned about
a half dozen acres on Brush Mountain
West since yesterday afternoon.

was sentenced last week to serve
14-and-a half years in prison for her
role in the methamphetamine trade in
the Grayson and Carroll County areas.

A federal jury had convicted Missy
Smith in January for distributing more
than 500 grams of meth.

She was sentenced Friday along with
Rene De La Cruz of Galax who got an

11-year sentence and Crosby Eugene
Williams of Independence who was
sentenced to 10 years.

stunned by the violence on the Tech
