GRAPHIC=Mornin' There are new worries about the

nation's food supply ... on the heels
of last month's massive pet food
recall.

The F-D-A's investigation into
tainted dog and cat food is expanding
to ingredients found in hundreds, if
not thousands of other foods at the
grocery store.

Tracie Strahan has the latest.

What started as a threat to household
pets ..

17:24:02 (nats: truck)

... has now moved onto the farm ... and
potentially to the dinner table.

The dangerous chemical melamine
(MEL'-uh-meen) first showed up in dog

and cat food.

Before more than 100 brands were
recalled ... some of that contaminated

pet food was sold to farmers for
livestock feed.

(map)

So far, hogs in 6 states from
California to New York are under

quarantine.

In three of those states ... hogs have
tested positive for melamine ...

and a poultry farm may be added to the
list.

Federal investigators can't be sure

that the dangerous chemical that

showed up in pet food hasn't also been
used in human food.

00:32:51 (GRFX: Dr. David Acheson /
FDA)

"We're simply asking the question,
could this have gone into other

places that we don't yet know about. No
evidence that it has. No

evidence that we have sick animals or
sick humans that are related to

contaminated protein concentrate."

They're taking no chances since protein
concentrate is found in imported

wheat and corn gluten, corn meal, soy
protein and rice bran.

These ingredients give texture to
everything from pizza dough to protein

shakes and energy bars.

The FDA has begun two weeks of testing.

(grfx)

Plus, there's a second chemical called
cyanuric acid.

Scientists found it in imported rice
protein samples that were going to

be used to make more pet food.

The biggest question on the Federal
Food and Drug Administration's plate

... exactly what could be on America's
plate.

(standup)

As the FDA investigates ... they plan
to inspect manufacturing plants in

China ... which they believe may be the
source of the contamination.

Police say they received a report
of a man with a gun at a hall on campus
just before midnight Monday night.

While investigating, a student
told them she and a group of students
were filming a class project involving
a robbery scene.

Officers evacuated and searched
the hall as a precaution.

One student was arrested for
brandishing a plastic, unloaded B-B gun
on campus.

What started as a threat to household
pets ..

17:24:02 (nats: truck)

... has now moved onto the farm ... and
potentially to the dinner table.

The dangerous chemical melamine
(MEL'-uh-meen) first showed up in dog

and cat food.

Before more than 100 brands were
recalled ... some of that contaminated

pet food was sold to farmers for
livestock feed.

(map)

So far, hogs in 6 states from
California to New York are under

quarantine.

In three of those states ... hogs have
tested positive for melamine ...

and a poultry farm may be added to the
list.

Federal investigators can't be sure
that the dangerous chemical that

showed up in pet food hasn't also been
used in human food.

00:32:51 (GRFX: Dr. David Acheson /
FDA)

"We're simply asking the question,
could this have gone into other

places that we don't yet know about. No
evidence that it has. No

evidence that we have sick animals or
sick humans that are related to

contaminated protein concentrate."

They're taking no chances since protein
concentrate is found in imported

wheat and corn gluten, corn meal, soy
protein and rice bran.

These ingredients give texture to
everything from pizza dough to protein

shakes and energy bars.

The FDA has begun two weeks of testing.

(grfx)

Plus, there's a second chemical called
cyanuric acid.

Scientists found it in imported rice
protein samples that were going to

be used to make more pet food.

The biggest question on the Federal
Food and Drug Administration's plate

... exactly what could be on America's
plate.

(standup)

As the FDA investigates ... they plan
to inspect manufacturing plants in

China ... which they believe may be the
source of the contamination.

Chances are, if a warning light
comes on in your dashboard... damage

If you have any trips upcoming,
the Car Care Council offers a
ten-minute pre-trip checklist to go
over before you travel.

You certainly want to check all
of the fluids...

Take a look at your belts and
hoses.

And check your tires.

Low tire pressure decreases fuel
mileage and shortens the life of the
tire.
