We have some breaking news
tonight...

Investigators have determined
what caused a deadly boating accident
on Smith Mountain Lake earlier this
month.

The Department of Game and Inland
Fisheries says it was a combination of
factors.

There was a mechanical defect in
the cooling system of the boat's engine
that allowed water to be pumped into
the boat, but not out.

That caused the 33-foot
Hacker-Craft to take on too much
weight and capsize in the high wind.

64-year-old Richard Smith
of Moneta was killed in the April
Fourth accident.

44-year-old David Reynolds
of Grottoes is presumed dead. His body
has not been found.

Two other men survived,
though none of the four was wearing a
life jacket

Game wardens say that
could have made a difference in this
case and they encourage every boater to
wear one.

the running for a new job in Florida,
and today Roanoke's school
superintendent said the controversy
surrounding his application is "a dead
issue."

prompted some Amherst County parents to
take their children of school today.

Administrators say an Amherst
County High School student made some
threats Monday and is no longer at the
school.


A number of anonymous text messages
were sent to students today, indicating
that that student was going to carry
out some of those threats during
classes.

Authorities say the expelled
student did "not" send those messages
and that he has "no ability to harm
anyone."

They say the person who did send
the text messages could face criminal
charges.

Spring Road just across the Rockbridge
County line.

Both had been shot to death.

seat and her husband was found outside
the car.

The Augusta County Sheriff's
office says Rhonda Chaplin was last
seen buying snacks at the Pilot Station
in Greenville on August 25th around
12:30 AM...about 75 minutes before the
crime.

testify against an ex-boyfriend in a
rape trial set to begin the week after
her murder.

That charge was eventually

Construction of an underground
garage is taking longer than expected.

Eventually the 58-thousand
square-foot grocery store will include

The price tag continues to rise,
as the grand opening keeps being
delayed.

Valley Bank has extended
additional lines of credit to the
developer... several times, with
payments on the loan now pushed back
until August 31st.

Education Classic.

The annual college football game
that was cripple after Victory Stadium
was demolished - and kept on life
support a year ago by the good folks at
Liberty and Ferrum - now has what
organizers hope is a permanant home at
Salem Stadium.

In the past, Salem has not
allowed any football team other than
the Spartnas to play on the field
before December.

But the playing surface is all
prepped and ready for the installation
on field turf next week - and City is
anxious to welcome Virginia State and
Livingstone to town on Saturday
September 22nd. The Trojans have a
huge alumni base in the area - and
Jones, himself is an alumnus of
Livingstone.

This game began in 2000 as a way
to help TAP's initiative to get
dropouts back in school.

In seven years - close to 600
young men and women have benefitted
from this game.
