Authorities say an accident is
affecting traffic on U-S Route 501 in
Halifax County, about 10 miles south of
South Boston.
The southbound right lane is closed.
Drivers in the area should expect
delays.

GRAPHIC=Crime Police are investigating a
robbery and shooting last night in
Danville.
It happened at around 6 o'clock.
Authorities say a 19-year-old man
was standing on East Thomas Street when
he was robbed at gunpoint of a cell
phone and a gold necklace.
After the items were taken, the
suspect then shot the victim in the
back.
The victim was taken to the
hospital and is listed in stable
condition.

GRAPHIC=CRIME There now are indictments,
charges and a step towards a trial in a
five-year-old Augusta County murder
case.

Investigators believe this man,
Gary Wayne Huffman shot and killed a
Lexington couple back in 2002.
Rhonda Chaplin was found slumped
over the steering wheel in a still-
running car, and her husband was lying
on the road, both shot to death in a
remote area of Augusta County.
Huffman is in prison right
now for firearm charges.
He could face the death sentence
if convicted of capital murder.

caused a deadly Smith Mountain Lake
boating accident earlier this month.

This Month The Department of Game and Inland
Fisheries says it was a combination of
factors.
There was a mechanical defect in
the cooling system of the boat's engine
that allowed water to be pumped into
the boat, but not out.
That caused the 33-foot
Hacker-Craft to take on too much
weight and capsize in the high wind.
64-year-old Richard Smith
of Moneta was killed in the April
Fourth accident.
44-year-old David Reynolds
of Grottoes is presumed dead. His body
has not been found.
Two other men survived,
though none of the four was wearing a
life jacket

years ago, the town of Lynchburg was
conceived when John Lynch began a ferry
service across the James River there.

To help celebrate that
anniversary, as well as the 400th
anniversary of Jamestown, Lynch's ferry
boat has been re-created and will
operate again this weekend.
Volunteers have spent the past
few weeks building the ferry out of
white oak and cypress wood.
It will play a big part in this
weekend's Amazing Lynch's Ferry
Festival.
Winners of a raffle will be
allowed to make the ferry trip across
the river.
The festival runs from 10 a-m to
4 p-m Saturday.

GRAPHIC=VT Moving Forward A Virginia Tech dance troupe
wants to provide a little entertainment
and more importantly, raise money for
shooting victims' families.

The Dance Company of Virginia
Tech puts on an annual show every
spring.
But this year, it was almost
canceled because of the shootings on
campus.
The troupe got together and
decided the show must go on.
Two of the numbers will
specifically be dedicated to the
victims.
The shows take place tonight at
seven and Saturday afternoon at two in
the Haymarket Theater inside Squires
Student Center.
Proceeds from the shows will go
towards the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund.

Pearisburg.

Crews were called out to this
home in the 25-hundred block of Curve
Road around three o'clock yesterday.
When firefighters arrived on the
scene they saw smoke.
One they entered the home they
found fire coming through the floor.
The incident commander says the
fire appeared to be coming from
underneath, where electrical wiring was
housed.
In addition to fire damage, the
home sustained extensive smoke and
water damage.
No one was home at the time of
the incident.

Roanoke store some time this summer.

The company's central kitchen
prepares more than one- hundred fresh
dishes and breads that will be
delivered to Roanoke daily.
Ukrop's also sells fresh,

prepare meals faster.
The Roanoke location will employ
two chefs.
There will also be a wi-fi cafe
serving breakfast, lunch and dinner--
along with a "Celebration Room"
customers can reserve for meetings.
