News 7 has learned a teacher
discovered a gun in a student's book
bag this morning at William Ruffner
Middle School.

The student is a seventh grader.

A school system spokesperson says
that there were never any threats to
students and no evacuations.

We do not know if any ammunition was
found in or near the gun.

There's no word if any charges
will be filed against the student.

Nearly four-thousand new troops joined
those already on the ground in

Iraq ... though the funding to pay for
their mission is tied up on

Capitol Hill.

(new sot: President Bush)

"It didn't make any sense to me to
impose view of politicians over the

judgements of our military leaders."

Almost as soon as it arrived on his
desk Tuesday ... President Bush

rejected the funding bill because it
set a deadline for pulling out

troops.

sot (Rep. John Boehner/House minority

leader )

"A clean bill means we don't have
handcuffs on the generals. We don't

have surrender dates and we don't tie
the hands of those generals trying

to prosecute the war on the ground. "

(standup/susan roberts/dc)

"The sticking point has always been the
timeline ... most Republicans

and the President say it's like setting
a date for failure.

So this afternoon, the President will
meet with Congressional leaders to

try to find common ground."

(grfx)

both sides are now looking at a bill
that has benchmarks Iraqis have

to meet to ensure progress ...

but no deadlines for mandatory troop
withdrawals.

sot (Sen. Patty Murray / D-WA)

"we are in the fifth year of this war
and iraqis refuse to stand on

their own.. Take responsibility for
their future"

In a last ditch effort, the House
Democrats will try to override the

President's veto today ... but they've
acknowledged all along, they

don't have the votes to make it happen.

The normally laid-back tourist town of
Sharm el Sheik,TRANSFORMED into a

POLICE STATE ahead of the two day
international summit on Iraq.

Only delegates' cars are allowed
anywhere near the conference center,

and they're THOUROUGHLY searched for
explosives.

Even before US Secretary of State
Condoleezza Rice touched down in

Egypt, she warned: "everything is at
stake" if the talks fail.

The US accuses Iran and Syria of
fueling the violence in Iraq by

supplying fighters and weapons --
charges both countries deny.

The Secretary of State has already
ruled out 'full scale negotiations'

with Iran, but in what appears a
reversal of policy says she wouldn't

AVOID an exchange.

ADVERSARIES WILL SIT DOWN FACE TO

Egypt is calling for a CEASEFIRE

between Iraqi forces and

insurgents...IRAQ says NO WAY.

SEVERAL countries are demanding a
timetable for US troop

withdrawal...and neither America NOR
Iraq will budge on THAT.

Still, the host country is hopeful some
headway can be made.

Reggie the elusive alligator was
spotted Monday afternoon after last
being seen a year and a half ago.

Wranglers are getting ready to
reel him in and workers are putting
fencing and warning signs up around a
Harbor City lake.

Reggie was an illegal pet
allegedly tossed into the 50-acre lake
when it got too big.

It was spotted in August 2005 and
caused a stir until disappearing the

following October.

City officials want to make sure
small children and small dogs are kept
away from the lakefront.

The Dolphins let go of Vick as
well as two other players.

Vick was signed last season as a
free agent receiver after a troubled
career as Virginia Tech's quarterback.

He appeared in only one game with
the Dolphins after spending some time
on the practice squad.

Vick was kicked off Virginia
Tech's team following his junior year
after repeated brushes with the law and
other misbehavior.

Former Virginia Cavalier Deyon
Williams appeared in 38 games while at
UVA totaling 95 catches for 1,237
yards and 10 touchdowns.

He is the 26th player in school
history to go over the 1,000 yard mark.

You may remember that Deyon's
senior year was plagued by a broken
bone in his leg.

The Redskins also signed
Maryland's Sam Hollenbach, who finished
his career as only the fourth Terrapin
to throw for more than 5,000 yards in
his career.

He finished his career on a high-

note, being named MVP of the 2006
Champs Sports Bowl.
