GRAPHIC=LANGE, LORRAINE What a difference a year makes for
EVENT=EDUCATION 7 BANNER the Roanoke County school system.

During this time last year, it was in
turmoil.

ENG#=1 VO-NAT

VO-NAT Superintendent Linda Weber decided to

temporarily step aside after calls for
her resignation in the Cave Spring
community.

Eventually, Weber decided to retire,
rather than return for the final year
of her contract.

Lorraine Lange then took over as
superintendent and one of the first
things she did was hold a series of
community meetings.

parents still have concerns.

One of the things she learned from
these community meetings was the need
for more school nurses.

NEXT YEAR WE'LL HAVE NURSES IN ALL OF

OQ=amount of time Another challenge is the

student/teacher ratio.

To address it, the school system
plans to hire more teachers next year,
although how many is still unclear.

A big issue is the need for upgraded
facilities; some of the county's
schools are more than fifty years old.

Take Northside High School which will
be totally reonvated beginning this
summer.

LANGE, LORRAINE FS IN MONITOR It would be interesting to see what
teachers think because you may remember
last year there was a survey that
showed a majority of teachers were
unhappy with central administration.

We understand there have been no
subsquent surveys or any plans to do
one in the future.

done is set up an employee advisory

Last Week Events hosted by Governor Tim
Kaine, including the concert in Capitol

That includes the stage, jumbo-

organizers.

At the request of Secret Service,
state employees were given the day
off.... something that could cost the
state an estimated 11- million
dollars.... but tourism officials say
it's worth it.

They estimate media coverage of
the event is worth millions in
advertising for this weekend's 400th
