gun wasn't real, parents' concerns
were.

officers converged on the E.C. Glass
campus around 7 a-m, after a witness
spotted someone walking through the
parking lot, carrying what looked like
a rifle.
The school was immediately locked
down ... students already inside were
herded into a gymnasium while others
were turned back at the entrances.

IN THE PROCESS OF BEGINNING.

mistaken identity ... the 'gun' was a
wooden R-O-T-C drill rifle ... and the
student carrying it into the school was
breaking no rules by doing so.
Classes resumed at 9:45, but some

the lack of information they were
getting.

arrested a man outside Glass who was
angry they weren't doing enough to deal
with what he thought was a bomb threat.
And an hour later, police had to
clear an actual bomb threat that forced
the evacuation of the Amelia Pride
Center and part of Dunbar Middle
School.

with a gun seen near Staunton River
High School Friday night had any
intention of harm.
Meanwhile, authorities in
Bedford County have still not decided
if they'll charge the man.

man with a gun near the school, forcing
the evacuation of several athletic
events.
Deputies made contact with the
person of interest late Friday night.
This morning, the sheriff's
office said the man was walking from
one residence to another and the high
school happened to be in between. He
was carrying an unloaded 22-caliber
rifle.
Authorities are trying to
determine if he set foot on school
property.

the Empress of the North hit a rock.

Welcome to the Monday ticker.
Yesterday, the Tech softball team
wrapped up its first ACC Tournament
title by beating Georgia Tech.
Now last night, when the NCAA
released the brackets for the upcoming
national tournament, the Hokies were
slated to play Cal State Fullerton in
Columbus.
While the Hokies are still
headed to Ohio, a clerical error was
made by the selection committee in
posting the matchups. Tech will
actually play Canisius in the opening
round game at 5pm on Friday.

to open the postseason in baseball.
Abe Naff's team won the U-S-A South
Conference Tournament back in Mid-April
securing the League's automatic bid.
Ferrum will host a 7 team
regional starting Wednesday, and the
Panthers will open up against York,
Pennsylvania. The Panthers hope to
send Abe Naff out with a bang in his
final season and playing at home is a
nice perk.

this week off, and rejoin its Nextel
Cup counterparts next week at the
Lowe's Motor Speedway where Danville
native Brad Coleman hopes to improve on
his 38th place in the points standings.

Carlisle School in Martinsville,
already has a pole to his credit this
season. He's driven everything from go
karts to sports cars at VIR and Daytona
