around Lynchburg, around Virginia and
indeed around the world. As thousandas
of people are just now learning of the
death of the Reverend Jerry Falwell.

More than two years after he nearly
died of heart problems, Falwell's
doctors say that is likely what he died
of today.

found unresponsive in his office,
people started to flock to the Thomas
Road Baptist Church to pray.

Community waited for confirmation of
the news that had already spread across
campus.

Dr. Ron Godwin, the chief
operating officer of Liberty said he
had had breakfast with Falwell 8:30, a
conversation he described as full of
vision and plans for the future... that
included discussion of the leadership
transition

Falwell returned to his office,

and it was there he was found
unconscious after colleagues realized
he had missed a meeting

But speakers also indicated that
the school is secure, that Jonathan
Falwell and Jerry Falwell Junior are

And that Falwell's vision is

say this was not a memorial service, or
a funeral... it was a gathering at
which they wanted to make a formal
announcement and ask for the prayers of
the liberty Uniuversity community.

They said more information will

1956, he founded Thomas Road Baptist

built a congregation that is now more

political organizations to harness the

group was credited with helping to

Penthouse Magazine published an
interview which the preacher said was
obtained under false pretenses.

And again in 1984, after Hustler
Magazine ran an ad parody depicting
Falwell as a drunk who enjoyed sex with

The case would go all the way to the
U.S. Supreme Court, but Falwell's
defamation lawsuit would ultimately
fail.

Three years later he took the plunge at
Heritage USA, and took over the
scandal-ridden PTL ministry from Jim

and Tammy Bakker.

In recent years, controversial comments
kept him in the spotlight. Some like a
1999 statement that the Antichrist is a
Jew, brought apologies...

headlines, he continued to lay the
groundwork for a growing local
presence.

The small bible college that started
with 154 students in the fall of 1971,
grew into a university claiming more
than 17- thousand.

Liberty University and its thousands of
graduates, Falwell predicted, would be

His doctors believe he passed

Over the last two years of his
life, the Reverend Jerry Falwell spent
his share of time in the hospital.

First in February of 2005 a
12-day bout with pneumonia. He was
placed on a ventilator because the
simple act of breathing was difficult.

Then a month later he came close to
dying of congestive heart failure. He
actually lost consciousness for several
minutes after going into respiratory
arrest. Then July of 2005 he went to
the Cleveland clinic Heart Center. His
family said he was getting a chemical

stress test and possibly heart
cauterization.

Later that year doctors did find a
70-percent blockage in an artery
--which they opened up with stents.

But through it all Falwell seemed
to bounce back to the health and the
pulpIt. When we sat down with him last
year -- he told News 7 he'd asked God
for another 15 years with an option to
renew.

Private First Class Christopher
Edward Murphy was killed early Saturday
when his convoy was attacked outside of
Baghdad.

of trying to sell guns at his middle
school on the same day as the Virginia
Tech shootings

arrested on April 25th on eleven
charges of intent to sell stolen
property.

Police say the boy took as many
as three guns to school on April 12th,
13th and 16th.

No one bought the weapons.

After a relative of the boy
called authorities, police found 11
guns at the teenager's house.

The boy is being held in the New
River Valley Juvenile Detention

Center.

Commission slashed the requested
increase.

who may have been infected with rabies.

The dog got into a fight Friday
morning and killed a raccoon --that
later turned out to be rabid.

Pet owners who live in the Villa
Heights area of Martinsville are urged
to keep their pets inside or confined

described as a white Pomeranian
mixed breed. Rabid animals can transmit
the disease to people. In humans, it's

The battle to contain a massive
wildfire in northern Florida is being
hampered once again by the weather.

Sot: Tom Speaks/Deputy Incident

Today is the same thing, going to have
this weather, lower humidity, higher

temperatures and wind so we are
expecting the same kind of push and
problems today.

Gusty winds on Monday pushed the blaze
over containment lines on western side
of the fire. The breach forced several
hundred homes to be evacuated, some for
the second time this week. But so far,
most property has been protected.

One thing that is making this fire so
difficult to contain is that its raging
through swamp land which means the
heavy machinery like this can't get in
deep enough to get in front of the
flames"

Fatigue is also becoming a major factor
for over 500 hundred firefighters on
the front lines.

incredible fuel loadings on the ground,

weather hasn t been helping one bit, so
our resources are getting tired.

Authorities say what they need most is
rain. Scattered thunderstorms are in
the forecast over the next few daysbut
it will probably take more than thatto
douse the giant wildfire that has
already consumed more than 300 thousand
acres.
