(END SOT) field could become home to Lakeside
Centre, a new hub for major retailers
and restaurants.
That may come as good news
shoppers, but it's not sitting well
with residents like Robert Poignant.
He's organized a petition drive
to fight the project.
8:56 Robert Poignant: "The
hundreds of people who signed our
petition fit the demographic that the
developer is after and they're saying
'no, we don't want it." 9:03
Poignant says the city's retail
needs are already being met.
He's also worried the winding
roads around the development will need
a lot of work - something he fears the
city will end up paying for.
10:18 "What we've not seen for
this year and projected out for the
next five or six years, is the cost,
the actual financial cost to the city."
10:25
37:04 "Tim Saunders/News 7: River
Ridge Mall has been the city's biggest
shopping center for years, but Lakeside
Centre is set to be even bigger. And
some worry that overflow of retail
could leave the hill city with a lot of
empty storefronts." 37:15
42:13 "We have an obligation to
try and promote economic development in
the city and maintain the quality of
life and it's a balancing act." 42:21
City manager Kimball Payne says
the idea of creating more empty
shopping centers is a concern, but it
won't stop developers.
41:44 Kimball Payne: "I feel it's
my obligation, if I can, to keep them
in the city for the revenue they're
going to produce in the city." 41:49
And for an area with a growing
appetite for retail, Lakeside Centre
could be the first of many new
developments on the horizon.
