Cassell entered a guilty plea
today....to one federal felony, which
was lying to an F-B-I agent.

News-7's Keith Humphry has the
details.

The charges ranged from racketeering to
trafficking in guns and drugs.

Now the government has agreed to drop
all the underlying charges against
Cassell- -those related to specific
criminal activity - -drug dealing,
money laundering and obstruction of
justice- -in exchange for owning up to
a lie.

The sheriff had told federal
investigators he had no knowledge of

anyone in his office selling illegal
drugs.

Cassell did know, because Sergeant
James Vaught told him.

for Cassell last year, and the sheriff

acknowledge he was aware of the drug

Meanwhile, the U.S. Attorney
called this a case of widespread
corruption.

strong case but declined to say why
then his office agreed to dismiss
several of the charges in exchange for
a plea agreement.

When he is sentenced later this
summer, Cassell could spend the next
five years behind bars and the U.S.
Attorney indicated today his office
will seek significant jail time in this
case.

with former officers in trouble with
the law.

VO-NAT Last night we told you the police

chief and sergeant of a Smyth County
town are behind bars accused of
sexually assaulting a teen.

Tonight News 7 has learned a
third police officer from the Chilhowie
Police Department was also arrested -
and fired.

Town leaders say James E. Runyon
was fired last Friday for violating
town policy.

He was arrested and charged with
selling drugs.

Runyon is out of jail on bond
awaiting trial.

other sex charges, contributing to the
delinquency of a minor and child
endangerment.

State police have been investigating
for several weeks now and he was
indicted by a grand jury on Wednesday.

He and former Sgt. Brian Doss are
accused of committing sex crimes
against a 17 year old girl during a

Halloween haunted house fundraiser.

Sheffield and Doss are both being held
without bond at the Southwest Virginia
Regional Jail in Abingdon. They both
have bond hearings scheduled for

on the force after a deadly shooting.

Officer A. S. Puckett had been on
administrative leave for the past month
while a routine investigation was
underway.

Puckett shotand killed 43
year-old John Harvey Bridges.

Bridges' roommate Ron Ragland
says he called police because his
friend was suicidal.

Police say when they arrived
Bridges grabbed a sword and came toward
them in a threatening manner.

But Ragland told us police never
gave the man a chance to drop the

weapon and that the sword never came
out of its cover.

Michael Waltrip's Toyota gang
continued to have its problems. David
Reuttiman crashed his Camry and the
boss man Michael Waltrip just destroyed
his car during his run. Both of those
Toyotas did not make the field.
Michael has now missed 11 straight
races.

Penske Racing dominated the time
trials sweeping the front row as Ryan
Newman won the pole and Kurt Busch
qualified second. In all - Dodge put
five cars in the top 10.

his Ford entering turn four, and by the
time he got out of it he was in the
wall.

The crash forced him to go to a
back up, but he should be find
qualifying for the Busch Series is not
until Saturday afternoon.
