The man who served 15 years as
Henry County's top cop has admitted he
committed a crime.

Frank Cassell entered a guilty
plea today... to one federal felony.
He admitted lying to an F-B-I
agent.

The charges ranged from racketeering to
trafficking in guns and drugs.
Now the government has agreed to drop
all the underlying charges against
Cassell- -those related to specific
criminal activity - -drug dealing,
money laundering and obstruction of
justice- -in exchange for owning up to
a lie.
The sheriff had told federal
investigators he had no knowledge of
anyone in his office selling illegal
drugs.
Cassell did know, because Sergeant
James Vaught told him.

On one occaision Vaught was heard
telling the Sheriff that drugs were
being confiscated and then sold on the
street. Cassell says, "that doesn't
shock me."
After Vaught asked the sheriff to
tell him if the D-E-A starts snooping
around, Cassell says: "If I know it,
you'll know it."

still waiting for their day in court.

year, including thirteen who were
employees of the Henry County Sheriff's
Office.
So far, seventeen defendants have
entered guilty pleas.
The three who remain are all
former deputies. They are scheduled

chief and sergeant of a Smyth County
town are behind bars accused of
sexually assaulting a teen.
Tonight News 7 has learned a
third police officer from the Chilhowie
Police Department was arrested - and
fired.
Town officials say James E.
Runyon was fired last Friday for
violating town policy.
He was charged with selling
drugs.
Runyon is out of jail on bond
awaiting trial.

Puckett returned to work this week at
the Roanke Police department.
He had been on administrative
leave for the past month while a
routine investigation was underway.

Officer Puckett, as you may
remember, fatally shot 43 year-old John
Harvey Bridges.
The incident happened April 18 at
the Ashton Hill Apartment complex.
At the time, we interviewed
Bridges' roommate Ron Ragland who says
he called police because his friend was
suicidal.
Police say when they arrived
Bridges grabbed a sword and came toward
them in a threatening manner.
His roommate disagreed with the
police account.
He told us police never gave him
a chance to drop the weapon and Bridges
never pulled the cover off of the
sword.
The Police Department has now
completed its investigation and has
given Officer Puckett clearance to
return to work.

over to the Commonwealth's Attorney's
office and it will be up to him to
determine if charges need to be filed.
The matter has not gone before a

are trying to decide whether to charge
a suspect with having a fake bomb.

Maintenance personnel at the
Village Apartments in Blacksburg
discovered what appeared to be a bomb
in an apartment.
Police say they found a device
similar to a suicide bomber's vest that
held six canisters and a circuit board.
The building was evacuated for
most of the day and the device was
eventually detonated.
Police believe it was a hoax,
however possession of even a phony
explosive device is a class six felony
in Virginia.

Grayson County, on the day after a
written threat was found at the high
school.
But school officials say
everything went smoothly, with few
problems and no new threats.
Extra police officers were on
hand, and the schools took additional
security measures, including a
precautionary lockdown.
Normally more than 700 students
attend Grayson County High School and
two nearby middle schools. Today, only
about 160 came to class.

These rankings are made each year
by Preservation Virginia and include
everything from battlefields to
historic buildings that aren't being
properly cared for.
This isn't the first time
something in Danville has made the
list, but it is the first time the
whole city was on it.
The trouble started when Danville
lost its two major industries, tobacco
and textiles.
Four Roanoke park buildings and
the Greenfield plantation in Botetourt
County are also on the list.

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael
Vick was the site of several felonies
says he still does not have solid
evidence to link Vick to dogfighting.
in fact, Surry County's Gerald
Poindexter says right now his office
does not have any eyewitnesses who say
they saw dogfighting at the home owned
by Vick where 66 dogs were seized.
Many close to Vick say his
biggest problem is associating with the
wrong people - ones who are bad
influences. That is something Vick is
finally addressing according to his
high school coach Tommy Reamon.

went through there first official

field. He asked for and received
telephone numbers after he was traded
