unofficial start to the summer driving
season is not all smooth sailing

estimated 32 million drivers are
dealing with another pain--this one is
at the pump

nationwide...that's just slightly
below the record high inflation

ago
Standup-oil companies say refinery
outages are squeezing supplies,
causing gas prices to spike. Despite
the hefty price tag, the demand for
gas is still higher than it was just
one year ago.

The groaning over gas prices has led
some to consider eco-friendly
options like hybrids or other methods
of transportation
Sot-some people would rather fly
instead of drive.
But for now most say shelling out a
little more cash is worth staying on
the roads.

Wytheville couple who crashed their
vehicle--

It happened at around 9:00
yesterday morning in Wytheville.
Police say 41-year-old Johnny
Earl Davis and 39-year-old Teresa Diane
Tilly were turning off Lee Highway onto
the Petunia Road extension, when their
vehicle ran off the road and
overturned.
Both were ejected from the
vehicle.
They later died at the
hospital.
Neither was wearing a seatbelt.

coach and it's a familiar name to fans
of Tech women's basketball.
Frank Recchia, played for the
Hokies from 2001-2005 where she had a
chance to play in both the Big East and
the ACC.
She will teach health and phys ed
at Byrd, as well.
Recchia has both a Bachelors and
Masters degree. During her time at
Tech she was named to the ACC Academic
Honor Roll, was a Big East Academic All

Last Night Two Senators are leading a
campaign to get NASCAR to give up its
roots and quit using gasoline and
instead switch to american made ethanol
- the stuff the Indy cars currently
run.
In March, all IndyCars began
racing on 100 percent ethanol fuel.
It's a non-toxic, biodegradable fuel,
delivers the same power drivers rely on
today, only without the air pollution.

O'Donnell decided not to return
after she and co-host Elizabeth
Hasselbeck had a huge blowout on the
show Wednesday. O'Donnell was upset
because
Hasselbeck didn't defend her when
conservatives accused her of calling
U-S troops terrorists. O'Donnell says
they misinterpreted her words.
The New York Post is reporting the
next day O'Donnell's head writer was
escorted out of "The View's" offices
for drawing moustaches on photos of
Hasselbeck that hang in the lobby.
The New York Post says A-B-C confirmed
the photos were defaced and said they
were investigating.

pressure on two humpback whales, who
remain stranded in the Sacramento
River.

VO-NAT Rescuers plan to use water from
hoses to nudge the wounded mammals back
into the Pacific.
But the rescuers aren't sure if the
tactic will work, since it has never
been tried before.
This is the latest in a series of
attempts to get the whales to swim the
70 miles back to sea.
