IT'S AS IF THEY SIMPLY DECIDED IT'S
TIME TO GO BACK.. TWO HUMPBACKS ARE NOW
SURGING TOWARD THE SALTY PACIFIC -
AFTER GALLAVANTING FOR TWO WEEKS INLAND
AS FAR UP AS SACRAMENTO - WHILE
IGNORING A VARIETY OF MANEUVERS BY
MARINE BIOLIGSTS TO STEER THEM DOWN

RIVER. (SOT)Bernadette Fees/Dept. fish

and Games we don' t know what spurred
them on - (butt) they certainly are
unpredictable...we're just happy to see
them moving ((MAP)) THE MOTHER AND HER
CALF SUDDENLY PICKED UP AND LEFT RIO
VISTA SUNDAY AFTERNOONTRAVELING SOME
25 MILES WEST TOWARD PITTSBURGH...
THAT'S ABOUT 50 MILES FROM SAN
FRANCISCO BAY. SCIENTISTS ON BOATS WILL
KEEP A PERIMETER AROUND THE WHALES AS
THEY GET INTO BUSIER WATERWAYS....
(SOT) we are putting more boats on the

water to protect them from other
vessels - and vice versa... THE MAMMALS
DO HAVE WOUNDS AND SKIN
DAMAGESCIENTISTS HAVE ALREADY INJECTED
BOTH WHALES WITH ANTIBIOTICSAND WILL
TRY TO INJECT THEM AGAIN THE WATER IS
GETTING SALTIER AS THEY HEAD WESTA
HEALTHIER ENVIRONMENT FOR THEM. -SOT-

the water is now more brackish -
healthier for them THE WHALES HAVE
GIVEN A RARE OPPORTUNITY TO SPECTATORS
AND SCIENTISTS TO SEE THEM UP
CLOSE..BUT HOPEFULLY NOW THEIR TIME HAS
COME.. AND THIS UNPREDICTABLE PAIR WILL
FINALLY MAKE IT BACK TO THE WILD WHERE
THEY BELONG. MANUEL GALLEGUS, CBS NEWS.
